🏈 Conerbacks still look terrible...

Pretty well conceived plan for Wisky on their passes. Run off our DBs with deep routes, then slip a RB out late, matched up on a linebacker. Last year our secondary issues were mainly on deep balls, and that was definitely not the case last night. Perhaps we will be in bend but not break mode more this year.

I watched a little of Ole Miss earlier, Chad Kelly is an clear upgrade over Bo Wallace. It will be interesting to see how we game plan against him

I wouldn't consider Kelly an upgrade until they have played someone above the HS level. People like to bash BAMA for their OOC. That yesterday was a joke!!

Terrible is way off. Green, definately. Most of the wide open completions were based on the defensive formations & they were mainly dinks & dunks as mentioned. Also, NO big plays of 30+ yards. You'd think after last years season & after OSU, WI wouldn've been chucking all their passes for 30+. All of those plays we had guys in position. The big lesson here is that on those attempts, their were NO completions & we were in position to make a clean play. Those PI plays are indicators the kid was there but there was no way in hell he'd let that ball get caught. Maybe panicked a little; that can just be taught to clean up w/ experience.

The woolyforum been finished for a minute.. lot of smart folks is over there....because things like this ... I truly hateit when ppl complains about something that they don't know nothing about... I mean they forgot we have Minkah and Hump back there... and it's their first game... smh.

I really don't know why the Woolly was brought into this thread. I understand that some of the people didn't gee and haw so wonderfully with the establishment here. Either way the majority of the contributors to this thread are not Woolly regulars.

Now on the topic, I thought our secondary was better last night than it was at the end of last season. As many have stated above, several of their completions were of the short quick flats route type where we had a tailback or fullback matched up in single coverage with a linebacker. That's almost an impossible route for the LB to prevent a completion on. They did a good job of making quick tackles and preventing YAC. The one longer pass back across the field to the tight end wasn't exactly defended swimmingly but if you take that one play and a couple of real ticky tack PI calls, we gave up a lot of 3-5 yard completions. I'd rather give up 5 of those than 1 40+ yarder.

the way we play in the secondary is so confusing and inefficient - going on several years now. We are loaded with 4 and 5 * guys. These guys are athletes who are extremely talented...they come to Bama and it seems, imo, they get tight. I say we need to turn them loose and play and let them cover as if in the back yard. I know it sounds goofy, again, just my opinion. Love the Tide!

Not politicing! The eye in the sky don't lie! When they review tape, it will cost them some money.

Cost who money? The ref?

Shit they must have lost their asses then the last two years on the same exact PI calls where our CB's are staring down their WR's....

I personally think they are marginal calls at best, but the game is all about the offense now. And if the CB doesn't turn his dang head around, it generally gets called. That's not a secret to anyone at this point.

Last night was not a litmus test on whether our secondary has improved or not. In two weeks when we play Ole Miss and other teams who can push the ball down field (unlike Whisky) then we will know if we've improved. Whisky's offense played into our strength. But their offense isn't the type that has given us problems.

Nothing wrong with having incredibly high standards but terrible? They looked pretty solid to me. Yes, Wisconsin looked okay passing the ball early but after the defense as a whole settled in, they made very few plays, especially after the 1st half and into the fourth before the 2's were substituted in. They held Wisconsin to like 230 yards in the air after completely taking away their running game and they had to work hard to get even that by dinking and and dunking. The only issues I really saw was that they(the DBs) still have problems not getting their heads turned around which leads and led to penalties. At least they didn't give up those potential big plays. Also, considering how young and inexperienced most of them are, its not surprising that there were mistakes. The young guys in that secondary have high ceilings and should only get better as the season goes along. Terrible? Come on now.

It will cost the officiating crew money! They should be suspended for several weeks of the season, much like Mark Curlee's crew got nailed several years ago.

Marginal calls? Definite offensive PI on #34 on the wheel route down our sideline when he stiff armed Dion Hamilton. The call on Minka on their last TD drive, a lot of hand fighting between the two. Should have been a no call. I didn't think their was much of anything at all on the offensive PI that Stewart got called for on the back shoulder fade either.

It's over and I'm done with it. Time to move on and continue preparations for Ole Piss. MTSU will run an uptempo style without the athletes of Ole Piss though. RTR

Moving on is a good idea... Thinking a college reffing crew is going to be suspended for a few reasonable PI calls is nuts.

The point is, we've been getting hammered on PI calls for quite a while now with the face guarding issue. Time to adjust, not adjust the officials.

I thought Stave made some really impressive throws. Looked like a much different QB from last year. Defense got caught off guard with them doing so many bootlegs, but once they settled down, UW's offense was inept.

Alabama looked very solid on Saturday in terms of physicality. Ragland looks like a monster in the middle, but Allen was really generating some rush. Secondary has room for improvement, but I was really impressed with Humphrey. Had a bad PI call, but I think he was targeted only twice through 3 quarters. Minkah's sack was awesome.

Can't remember who played JACK mostly. Lee or Pettway, but, they did a good job.

Wisconsin did most of their damage with short, safe passes. A good sign is that our young dbs were, for the most part, in the right place. With more and more experience, they will turn the head enough to make a great play instead of being flagged for interference.... and by the way at least one of the flags should have been against the badger receiver. There were some good coverage plays as well. The YAC was kept to a minimum.
For me, I think it was a good start and with experience, it will only get better.

Reasonable? I'm guessing you never coached the game. A lot of DB coaches their kids to make a move on the WRs eyes, don't turn around and look because that is when you slow down to try and find the ball and thus misplay ball and WR. You swim or bring a hatchet down across the arms. Everyone has their own idea on how to coach DBs, especially the people sitting on their coaches or in their recliners.
