Wayne, look at this and let me know your thoughts. The au recruiting machine seems to get players win or lose. Good year, bad year, doesn't seem to matter. One year out of the top 13 in the past 12 years with 7 season of 5 lossses or more.

2004 finish 13-0...rivals 2005 recruiting finish #13
2005 finish 9-3...rivals 2006 recruiting finish #12
2006 finish 11-2...rivals 2007 recruiting finish #7
2007 finish 9-4...rivals 2008 recruiting finish #20
2008 finish 5-7...rivals 2009 recruiting finish #19
2009 finish 8-5...rivals 2010 recruiting finish #4
2010 finish 14-0...rivals 2011 recruiting finish #7
2011 finish 8-5...rivals 2012 recruiting finish #10
2012 finish 3-9...rivals 2013 recruiting finish #9
2013 finish 12-2...rivals 2014 recruiting ranking #9
2014 finish 8-5...rivals 2015 recruiting ranking #7
2015 finish 7-6...rivals 2016 recruiting ranking #9
2016 finish 8-5...rivals current recruiting ranking #12. For reference, (and it could change) thats ahead of Clemson, Notre Dame USC and Washington to name a few.

And by comparison:
here is how Bama finished:

2004 finish 6-6...rivals 2005 recruiting finish #18
2005 finish 10-2...rivals 2006 recruiting finish #13
2006 finish 6-7...rivals 2007 recruiting finish #11
2007 finish 7-6...rivals 2008 recruiting finish #11
2008 finish 12-2...rivals 2009 recruiting finish #1
2009 finish 14-0...rivals 2010 recruiting finish #1
2010 finish 10-3...rivals 2011 recruiting finish #5
2011 finish 12-1...rivals 2012 recruiting finish #1
2012 finish 13-1...rivals 2013 recruiting finish #1
2013 finish 11-2...rivals 2014 recruiting finish #1
2014 finish 12-2 ...rivals 2015 recruiting finish #1
2015 finish 14-1...rivals 2016 recruiting finish #2
2016 finish 14-1...rivals 2017 recruiting finish, currently #1

And compare them to the UT's of the world:

Texas has out recruited auburn over the last 11 years and Tennessee is not to far behind them either. Going back to the 2006 season (11 years not counting the current 2017 class) auburn has 1 National Championship and 1 runner up while Texas and Tennessee have neither ( Texas did win it all in 05 with Vince Young).

In that span Texas has had 6 top five classes while Tennessee has had three and auburn has had only one. Texas and auburn have both had 7 top ten classes while Tennessee has had five and as far as top 20 classes auburn has had 11 while Texas has had 10 and Tennessee has had 8.

My thoughts: gotta have the coaches who can coach them up.

The barn usually does well in recruiting because Gus Gus can promise early playing time, which is easy since there are only a few players who actually excel in his program.

Then there's Sammy Coates' quote about his struggles in his rookie training camp when he emphatically told a reporter that he didn't learn any meaningful skills at the barn.

Coach with a HS background hasn't developed an ability to develop his players. A coach with an NFL and major college background, however, knows how to get them ready for the league.

I have heard CNS say it multiple times. When a kid commits to your school, they have bought in to an extent and already of the mindset needed to work and become successful. You always have those that "weed" themselves out. Every time I see a situation where a kid like Jonathan Kongbo at UT this past year.....this statement rings in my head. I think that is why we see so many highly recruited targets that go elsewhere and suck it up. Saban is not only a master recruiter, but character and seeing the individual as a whole helps him determine of they have what it takes to be a part of UA and become the best they can be.

The barners have always been connected to the Georgia recruiting landscape and it's hard to get any closer to Florida than the barners are. They have perennially been a better than average SEC team over the decades who just happens to believe and aspire to the idea they can be and should be equal to Bama. That has proven to be a historic fallacy within the football program. But hey, they can recruit.
