🏈 Compare Notre Dame vs Alabama offensive output

Now I know some of you are questioning why I'm looking at offensive numbers, quite frankly I don't care about the defenses right now. I want to see what each teams offense has been able to do. I know Notre Dame plays a full schedule - ie, they aren't playing powerhouses like FAU, Western Carolina, or Western Kentucky (even though they are in a bowl game), that must be taken into account when looking at the statistics - maybe we don't score as many points against tougher competition, maybe we do...who knows, but its still something to consider when looking at the data below.

I guess I started down this path to see exactly what to expect from Notre Dame's offensive output.

-----------

To get it started, I'm going to look at each teams output when it comes to Offensive Touchdowns.

Notre Dame
Passing = 13 TDs (Eifert accounts for 4 of these)
Rushing = 22 TDs

Total 35 TDs via offense / 12 games = ~2.91 TDs per game.

Alabama
Passing = 27 TDs (Michael Williams has accounted for 3)
Rushing = 35 TDs

Total 62 TDs via offense / 13 games = ~4.76 TDs per game.

--------

Next, I wanted to compare Extra Points - as this is a pretty good indication of the number of TD's scored either via offense, defense, or special teams play - doesn't include 2 point conversions.

Notre Dame
Extra Point Attempted = 33
Extra Point Made = 31 (94% made)

Alabama
Extra Point Attempted = 63
Extra Point Made = 63 (100% made)

As far as I can remember, we've only went for a single 2 point conversion, but I could have missed one.

--------

Next I wanted to see what type of action field goal kickers are getting stuck with - ie, the offense can't move the ball into the end zone, so the FG kicker had to man up and help out the offense - both are equally successful at making their attempts at 75% each.

Notre Dame
Field Goals Attempted = 32
Field Goals Made = 24 (75%)

Alabama
Field Goals Attempted = 20
Field Goals Made =15 (75%)

---------

Lets look at the Red Zone Offense - both teams do a good job of taking advantages of the red zone, notice that Notre Dame has to rely more heavily on the kicker than we do in the red zone.

Notre Dame = 46% (19 FGs in 46 scores)
Alabama = 19% (10 FGs in 51 scores)

---------

I was curious, which team punts the most, another sign of the offenses ability to produce. This really didn't indicate much.

Notre Dame = 48 total punts (avg 4 per game)
Alabama = 46 total punts (avg 3.5 per game)

---------

The key takeaway I'm getting from this exercise Alabama has more explosive offense output than Notre Dame, resulting in points that don't show up in the red zone offense.

Notre Dame
Passing = 69% (9 of 13) of passing TDs are scored within the red zone.
Rushing = 82% (18 of 22) of rushing TDs are scored within the red zone.

Alabama
Passing = 41% (11 of 27) of passing TDs are scored within the red zone.
Rushing = 86% (30 of 35) of rushing TDs are scored within the red zone.

We never see a lot of threads about a part of the team that's doing well.

One example?

Bama is 51 of 57 in the red zone this year with 41 TD's.

Last year through 13 games, 51 of 58 in the red zone with 32 TD's.

That's roughly 72% of the times in the red zone we're getting TD's in 2012 versus 55% a year ago.

It is worth noting Notre Dame is ranked #1 in red zone defense, Alabama #2.

Offense is 15th for UA, ND at #78. Quite a difference there...

On red zone defense...

With LSU coming in at #33 in the nation we've played four teams ranked higher than LSU.

Notre Dame has played two in the top fifty. They scored 17 against fourth ranked BYU.

Their special teams unit hasn't been very good either. Their kicker is 23 for 31 on the year, he's missed four within 40 yards. Return wise, their kick/punt returner has returned a total of 50 yards this year, and with a defense as good as ND"s that has forced many 3-and-outs ,which is good for us because this game will be about field position. Their punter has been pretty solid but has only hit one punt inside the opponents 20.

The question, which offense will impose its will. I like Alabama's chances based on their output this season.

Its pretty interesting to see just what the Alabama offense has done this season in terms of scoring in the red zone and outside of the red zone. In my opinion, its more telling to show what the Notre Dame offense has not done this season in the red zone.

In terms of red zone defense, Alabama is ranked #1 and Notre Dame is ranked #4. Notre Dame has only allowed 2 Red Zone rushing TD's in 12 games, forcing more opponents to resorting to kicking FGs. I look forward to seeing Alabama increase the number of red zone rushing TDs allowed by Notre Dame in 11 days.

To speak more to what Terry mentioned about Alabama going up against red zone defenses. Here is a quick example of the top 43 red zone defenses - it only has opponents that Alabama has played this year. The last column shows what Alabama was able to score via TDs against these teams.

Those who are picking ND to score 9 or 12 points are on the right track. No offense in 1A bogs down and kicks more FGs than does ND's. Oklahoma State is the only one with more FGs than ND in 12 games played. However OK State scored 65 TDs with their 25 FGs. ND has 36 TDs and 24 FGs.

Ball State had 52 TDs and kicked 25 FGs in 13 games. Toledo scored 49 TDs and kicked 24 FGs in 13 games. ND was pathetic in this regard. FWIW, Bama had 65 & 15 in 13 games.
