I thought his Bear Bryant comment was stupid and a little classless, but whatever.

Also, there is a rumor floating around that Hawkins interviewed for the UCLA job on Monday and wants it really badly. Not sure if there is any truth to it, but a little distraction on their end couldn't hurt.

yea i found nothing wrong with what he said. i mean we say stuff like that all the time lol. whatever the Bear wanted he could have. it was a stupid, retarded question for the interviewer to ask tho. i think he was very respectful towards Alabama in the things he said.

Here's the comment:

On why Alabama’s mascot is an elephant
Dan Hawkins: “I don’t know. Hey, if (Alabama coaching legend) Bear Bryant wants an elephant, it’s an elephant. That’s all I know. It can be whatever he wants it to be."

It's stupid because Bear Bryant had nothing to do with the selection of our mascot. The mascot was chosen before Bryant was even born and I'm not sure why Hawkins feels the need to bring up Bryant in this interview. I think it's classless because he seems to be poking at our tradition. Just because Colorado has little tradition and no legendary head coach, there's no reason to try and poke at us because we, "still give the Bear whatever he wants." that's just stupid and classless to me.

I'll agree with that. Can you imagine if a reporter asked Saban, "So why do think Colorado's macot is a Buffalo?" I don't think he would even answer.

i've also read in several different sources (books/papers/etc.) that Coach Bryant didn't like the idea of having an elephant as a mascot.

He was trying to answer a stupid question the best he could. The sportswriter is the idiot for asking a lame question.

Bryant was alive and well when the elephant mascot came about, just one year before he came to Alabama.

It was as a stupid question......The answer was a compliment to Bryant in the way I took it.

I think he's thinking of "Big Al", who only came into existence in the late 70's.

Frankly, I think it was Hawkins' way of blowing off a dumb question. I took no offense. There's 1,000 ways to say something classless about Alabama, I don't think that was one of them.

Yeah, all he was saying was basically, "hey i gotta give it up for Bear Bryant." we can't expect him to know all the history of alabama and all that

I read it and actually thought it was more a compliment to Coach Bryant and his stature and enfluence than anything else.

That's not to say that Bryant wanted or added the mascot, but that he is the face or the icon of the program to many people even today. What Bear wants, Bear gets. I suspect Hawkins knows who Bryant was and respects the man. I didn't have a problem with the comment.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with Lenny ( :D ) I took it as a compliment fit into a stupid question. Everyone knew that if Coach Bryant wanted or didn't want something, he had the swagger to make it happen.

At least that's the way I took it.

Why would the Colorado (and former Boise State) coach know why we have an elephant as a mascot. There are people in the South that don't even know why. He just made a nice jesture to Bryant and thats all it is.
