🏈 Coffee has shot at UA rushing record

Humphrey had 3 games where he rushed over 200 that year...he may beat him in total yards, but that's a hell of a mark to beat. Coffee has one, against UK. But, overall, he's had a better performance than Bobby.

Penn St. shut Bobby down that year...less than 30 yards rushing in that game...heck, the team didn't get over 50 that day.

I remember Doug Layton commenting on the broadcast during that game that we were averaging 18 inches per running play in the game.

I know Bobby and I'm sure he'd be cheering Glenn on if he got near the record.

I recall that year pretty clearly in one respect. I never liked Miami, so seeing them beaten in the bowl game that year (giving Penn St the NC) was sweet.

But, specifically, that was just at the beginning of my years really breaking down football games.

Those two teams played some really, really weak competition that year. I recall that between both teams, they had beaten 14 or 15 teams with less than a .500 record on the season. Both were still independents at the time they played.

I also recall having a hard time deciding which team to root for in the bowl game the year before that...with UT playing Miami. That one sticks out because that very easily could have been a Sugar Bowl invite for the Tide that year.

Do you recall that year, 1985, Howard? Should have beaten UT that year...had two chances to score in the 4th and couldn't. All that hope thinking Shula could pull that one out like he had Georgia to open the season?

--- sorry to hijack the thread BigAl...small walk down memory lane for a minute ---

I recall it well. Paul Kennedy was our play by play guy that year, and he had some memorable moments. The "God bless you Mike Shula" was one of them, after he had found Bell wide open for the winner against Georgia. His call of the drive leading up to the Van Tiffin kick against Auburn was great as well. Somehwere, put away in a box, I have his play by play call on cassette of that Auburen game. It was some kind of special offer that the Birmingham News had done. That 1985 team was a very good team, but Penn State stuffed our running game. That was the 6-3 loss, I believe. The Tennessee loss was a tough one that year (wasn't Tony Robinson their quarterback then?), but the rivalry itself was much different back then. We would beat each other's heads in on the filed than shake hands in respect when it was over. I hope Bama/UT will be able to get back to that.

If Mike Shula had never been our HC, he would be a very fondly remembered player.

PSU stuffed our run game worse in '86 than '85. I know we didn't get over 100 yards rushing in that game. (I've actually got that VHS still...ABC broadcast, national game that day) We only lost by two points to PSU and then followed it with a two point loss to UT.

And yes, it was Robinson...had a Heisman campaign going if I recall correctly and that was the last game of the year he played. Blew out his knee?

'85 was a good Penn State team as well. I remember how balanced their offense was, virtually mistake free on turnovers and penalties.

Yes, Robinson blew out his knee early in the 4th in that game. I remember being elated at first, then ashamed of myself for enjoying a player getting hurt. He'd probably have succeeded in the NFL without that injury, but knee surgery then wasn't anywhere close to what it is today.

I didn't have anything like the dislike for UT then that I do now. Miami was already Thug U, so I pulled for the Vols against the Canes.

Thinking about Booby Humphrey got me to thinking about Coffee. Their running styles are similar. Both hit the holes hard and often drove the pile back. Coffee benefitted by playing for one of our best ever OLs and had a chance to break long TD runs this year. He definitely has the speed to do so. I believe Coffee has more straight ahead speed than Bobby did.
