🏈 Chris Samuels & Tim Castille Leave Alabama: Joining The High School Coaching Ranks

Samuels, who served as offensive coordinator at Blount in 2011, is now the head coach at Osbourn High in Manassas, Va.

Mobile native and former Shaw High and Alabama star Chris Samuels has left the Crimson Tide's off-the-field staff to return to high school coaching.

Samuels is now the head coach at Osbourn High in Manassas, Va., according to a report from ESPN.

"College is very demanding from a time standpoint," Samuels told ESPN. "If I'm going to make that sacrifice, I wanted to be a position coach, but I chose to step down and I can have family time and still enjoy coaching."

Samuels and wife Monique are scheduled to have their second child in June, according to the ESPN report. Samuels was in player development at Alabama this past season. He spent the previous two years running the scout team offensive line and earned his degree from the school at that time.

In moving to Virginia, he is returning to the area where he starred in the NFL.
Samuels, drafted 3rd overall by Washington in 2000, was a six-time Pro Bowler in 10 NFL seasons with the Redskins, and started all 141 games in which he played. He retired from the league following the 2009 season.

Samuels was an All-American offensive lineman at Alabama. He started 42 games for the Crimson Tide from 1996 to 1999 and won the Outland Trophy in 1999.

He played at Shaw in the early to mid-1990s. A neck injury limited his playing time late in his senior season, but he still graded 90 percent and led the team to an 8-3 record and a spot in the playoffs. He played for coach Tommy Davis.

Osbourn won't be Samuel's first foray into high school coaching. He served as the offensive coordinator at Blount High School in Prichard, Ala., in 2011, one year after he retired from the Redskins due to injuries.

The Leopards went 10-2 that year, losing to Fairhope in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. The offense averaged 32.5 points a game under Samuels and head coach Kelvin Sigler, another former Tide star.

He will take over an Osbourn team that has posted consecutive 3-7 seasons and last made the playoffs in 2011, according to the Washington Post.

Castille accepts position with the Thompson football program.

Tim Castille has a pretty impressive football resume. He played in 31 games across his three seasons the NFL and appeared in 44 games at Alabama. The former fullback scored 21 touchdowns during his four seasons in Tuscaloosa.

Prior to that, Castille had a prolific high school career. The Briarwood Christian all-time great is believed to the best the only player in state history to be named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association's All-State first team squad for five straight seasons.

Those life experiences have led him back to the high school game. Castille was hired at Thompson this month to coach running backs and coordinate the strength and conditioning program. Castille had spent the last few season on the Alabama staff working as either a graduate assistant or an off-the-field analyst for the Crimson Tide.

The Thompson football program is ecstatic to have him. Newly-hired head coach Mark Freeman has one four AISA titles at Bessemer Academy and another two AHSAA Class 5A titles at Spanish Fort along his 16 seasons as a head coach.

"We are just tickled to have him," Freeman said. "He's doing a great job already like I knew he would and the kids already love working with him. We're looking forward to him being a big part of what we do. I told him the other day God placed him at a perfect place here at a perfect time for all of us. He's a great person from a great family who will do an outstanding job here."

Castille also played with his brother Simeon in Tuscaloosa. The boys are the sons of former Alabama All-American Jeremiah Castille. Their father also went on to play in the NFL for the Denver Broncos and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

What he wrote versus what he meant:

Castille has been working with the Alabama football staff but we don't know what, exactly, he's been doing.
