Changing avatar

I'm new to the board, so not sure where is best to post this (tried searching but couldn't find anything).

I'm trying to change my avatar. Unfortunately when I try and select ones of the ones already available I get this message:

The following error occurred:
Your avatar's file size is too large. Please upload an avatar no bigger than 50 KB.

And when I try to upload an image that is less than 50KB and the correct size I still get the same error.

Suggestions? Thanks!
