🏈 celebration penalty thread (back to washington vs BYU)

i have been reading opinions about this since the georgia lsu game yesterday.. my opinion is that it did hurt their chances of winning the game, but my big question is this..

last year when jake locker got the penalty called against BYU he was penalized on the extra point.. this was a situation where washington needed to make a 2 point conversion in order to win the game.. as a result of the penalty the ball was placed on the 17 and a half yardline.. pretty much making a 2 point conversion out of the question.

georgia on the other hand got penalized on the kickoff.. this penalty really hurt georgia badly because field position was a key issue.. kicking off from your on 15 yardline is not good when a fieldgoal is all it takes to beat you..

why is there so much variation in this penalty? when is it actually supposed to be assessed? and i do agree with alot of P.O.ed bulldog fans that tebow celebrates more than any player in college football and that his celebrations are directed to the fans..

georgia lost because their defense is a joke and they have NO running game.

LSU won because their defense is half-decent and they can actually run the ball sometimes.

i know the call affected the last drive's field position, but i think overall the team that was more fundamentally sound in the defense and running game won... which is usually the case. i don't like either team, but it would have upset me more for this to have occurred in the other direction with uga winning.

The opposing team is given the choice of where to accept the penalty in those cases. Some penalties are spot or from the previous LOS or enforced at the end of the run.

The NCAA in their infinite wisdom has taken the enjoyment out of a kid scoring period. They have given TOO MUCH interpretive ability to the officials regarding "celebration".

The rule allows "gymnastic scoring" from the "judges". Tebow gets a "10". Everybody else gets a flag.

That about sums it up doesn't it. The fact the SEC office issued a statement about the penalty before the day was done tells me they were in "cover-proverbial-ass" mode. It was nit picky but like many good coaches have said before, "you shouldn't allow yourself to get into a situation where one bad call can cost you the game".

That penalty was horrible....some say dont allow yourself to get in a position to let ONE penalty "bad call" affect the outcome of the game...well..its just not that simple IMO. That penalty had a huge effect on the outcome of the game. In close games..penalties can make the difference. There just is no fair "across the board" calling of these penalties...what one ref may think is excessive..another may not. IMO they need to enforce the taunting rule and delay of game....just take out that excessive celebration garbage. They are kids having fun....in huge games..and to be penalized for celebrating with your friends is a bunch of horsechit.

I hate that crap. I'm all for it when they penalize someone for ACTUAL excessive celebration or taunting. they're not doing that imo, they are taking the fun out of it alot for the players. look at some of the calls they've made. two against Georgia last week were just absolutely horrible. first the big TE makes a huge catch on the 3rd and jumps up and starts trying to pump up the crowd, they throw a flag and say he was taunting. that is just horrible. and then one on AJ Green when he did nothing more than slap fives with his teammates (who were all running up to him and slapping him on the chest, back, etc.). It was bad last year but it's worse this year. I remember last year they flagged Marquis Maze when he stood in the endzone and crossed his arms and looked at the fans. that's just horrible and how bout the infamous "call me now" gesture JPW made last year that got flagged (a big penalty) which pissed me off even more when i found out that Pope Tebow I did the same exact thing a few weeks before with no flag thrown. that's one of the biggest thing that pisses me off is the lack of consistency week in and week out. tho they were pretty consistently bad against Georgia, they even called one on the LSU RB when he raised his arms in the endzone, smh.
