Bama News

Baseball was back on television this weekend and there were ā€œfansā€ of a sort — virtual fans, in some cases, or cardboard cutout fans, with some piped-in noise.

Not one of them bought a ticket.

That’s one of the major issues facing college football teams, including Alabama, as the final sands in the hourglass before a 2020 season decision slips away.

The decision is complicated but for many teams, including those in the SEC, the breakdown is this. On one side, what are institutions, and their football teams, required by their mission to do in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic? On the other, what can they afford to do and still see the survival of their football programs and, by extension, intercollegiate athletics?

The economic consequences are huge. That’s why, so far, the Big Ten and the Pac-12 have reduced their schedules but not eliminated them.

Ticket revenues aren’t the only source of income. If there are televised games, there will be television money. This isn’t quite 1918, when the admission dollars collected in a cigar box at the ticket window was the entire cabbage patch. But it is also why Alabama (along the rest of the SEC) has made no official announcement about fans, no fans, or some fans.

There are various ways of calculating numbers, but one estimate this week was that playing at 50 percent capacity — that’s bringing about 45,000 people to Tuscaloosa on Saturdays, give or take — would still show a revenue shortfall for Alabama athletics of somewhere between $30 million and $40 million, or around 20 percent of last year’s operating budget. Drop that number to zero fans, and you get a financial bloodbath both for UA and the surrounding Tuscaloosa community. That doesn’t mean the sacrifice won’t have to be made for the public’s health, but we are talking about a slice-to-thebone sacrifice.

Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne, who is acutely aware of those issues and the growing time urgency for ticket policy information for UA fans, responded to The Tuscaloosa News’ questions on a timeline on Saturday.

ā€œNothing is finalized on capacity,ā€ Byrne said in a text message. ā€œ(We are) hoping to announce that in a week or two. We have multiple ticket plans put together depending on capacity.ā€

Things will probably move quickly as soon as the Southeastern Conference announces its plan for the season, possibly in the coming week, possibly the week after. There may still be a no-football option although it is hard to imagine the SEC presidents being even more cautious than their peers in the Big Ten and Pac-12, unless the coronavirus numbers are simply overwhelming. Maybe they are, but at a basic level, people can be confused by sitting at home watching the Braves and Mets on television and then being told that other sports can’t at least play without fans, even college sports.

Most important of all is that preventive measures remain of a paramount importance. If there are games, then an attendance policy will have to be implemented. Whether the SEC will mandate a single percentage that applies to all schools is uncertain, but chances are that will be decided at the institutional level. For competitive reasons, the SEC might try to set a maximum so that one school playing a rival at home doesn’t throw caution to the wind and pack the place.

Of more immediate importance, how many games will there be? If Alabama goes to a league schedule with only five home games, those tickets will not be cheap.

They probably won’t even be moderate.

The math might be different if somehow the league’s current 12-game schedule holds and Alabama finds itself unexpectedly with eight games in Tuscaloosa.

Nothing is certain yet. That includes any season at all. Whether there is a safe level of attendance that can staunch the financial bleeding will be answered quickly, if there is one.

The Clemson University Board of Trustees met Friday to talk about a list of topics, including the potential return of football.
During the meeting, the school's athletic director Dan Radakovich announced results of a survey of season ticket holders.
The survey found:
  • 83% indicated they are 'comfortable' coming to games in the fall with social distancing measures.
  • 54% indicated they would prefer 'fall football without fans' versus 'spring football with fans.'
  • 21% indicated they would tailgate on campus even without tickets to the game.
For more on the survey, click here.

Radakovich said the decision about the capacity of the stadium was still being discussed and he hoped for a decision in the next three weeks.
The university had already announced it would move to mobile-only ticketing for the football season. Radakovich said the information on the app that will be used will be released in August.

Atleast there AD is interacting with fans...season ticketholders....
So far ours...Zilch
He's been clear in his statements. Are you dismissing his FB Live? Or, did you just miss the broadcast?

And he's (Sankey) said, practically, the same thing. Byrne has maintained what he said two months ago, "be patient." Just like what's been posted here for weeks, the decision on how many hasn't been made. Radakovich said the same thing.

The last time you mentioned your dissatisfaction with how Byrne has communicated with the fan base I listed what's being considered right now for the fall as far as tickets are concerned as well as the feelings on the season being played out. Nothing has really changed. The mindset is 90-10 coming out of this weekend.

Apparently..... haven’t heard of broadcast or anything else....
Other than..... the months ago when.... it was put out that they still wanted the money ( tickets) even if u couldn’t get in the games...

They have our emails...you would think they would culture that cash cow base

See how it plays out...

What now?

You want Byrne to send out an email saying, "we haven't reached our final decision but we wanted to make an announcement to say we haven't made the final decision?" šŸ™ƒ

Here's where it is at the risk of repetition.

Right now, plans are two ticket packages.
If you choose not to attend, you'll get a refund for your tickets.
The decision is about capacity with the general feeling there's a 90% chance the SEC is playing (unless something dramatic happens.)
BYU is being finalized, hopefully in Tuscaloosa. There is flexibility between Wk1 and Wk2 for BYU...their first four games have been canceled giving the chance we see Bama vs BYU in Wk 2 if Ga. State isn't playing.

Yeah..... i guess i would look at season ticket holders as my "stock holders" and make sure they heard news directly from me ( GB) serving as chairman of the board....instead of press or on message boards...

But....there is a lot more than just getting sesson tickets money back..... or 2 tickets.....

And Terry....i aint no "johnny come lately" fan that has started following and supporting bama since 2009.... so... i am critical of this stuff..among other decisions from million dollar managers... as i have been in past... when i think they are outta touch with the interest of bama

What news? There has not been an official decision made but you're wanting news? I was being sarcastic, but an email from Byrne would say exactly what I alluded to earlier.

"This is an announcement to let you know we'll make an announcement when we make the final decision."

I don't post here as often as I could, but I do try to keep you guys informed on what I've learned. In a sense it's no different than the recruiting threads. IE: "This is a kid to watch" and "this is what they're thinking."

I suspect you don't care for the way information is being disseminated when said information isn't ready to be released from that Athletic Department. It falls into "nothing official yet, but..."

Are you saying you want Tide Pride money back as well?

"I ain't no 'johnny come lately'" but I'm upset about things I can't control ... been the case with the ticket office for decades. I've been critical of their process but I don't get upset or pessimistic about what's happening. It is what it is.

I do not believe the administration is out of touch with the interest of Bama. I do believe you, and others, aren't fond of the changes as the program moves into this age. It's also my opinion Byrne's job is to run the athletic department, not pander to some of the fan base.

We'll know what's happening within a matter of a few days. As Bryne said a few weeks ago, "let's just be patient." I'm not a patient person by nature but I can live with what's going on now.

First....TerryP.....you do a good job posting info....thats one reason i stay on this site....plus most other posters....only site i am on.... kudos!

Ok.... i like transparency.....doesn’t seem to be a lot..just interesting when i see stuff from other programs....other ADs.....i do hope i hear from Bama about stuff before i read it in AL.com...i think they owe us season ticket / boosters this..

. but my feelings go back futher than this football season..( see our discussion about Coleman ...)
football...nicks gonna handle all football stuff...so Bryn will just rubber stamp it... hope he is smart enough to not cross Nick...

And ADs job IS to culture the fan base....its easy now...because of Nick...but other sports also... pander to them.... the fan base is the essence of the program...
When these players are gone, when nick and staff are gone, the fan base is still here... and their money keeps the ship afloat...

Do i want my money back...960$ tickets...500-600TP??? I really dont care...
Do i wanna keep my tickets...yep... for future years...yep/ maybe ...
We’ll see.... i am not upset...( well, a little) .and definitely not a pessimist...lol.
Got a lot more going on than having to worry about "stuff i cant control "..

This response will likely come in sections...got a lot to do today starting in a few minutes.

It's not unlike what we see from the SEC as a whole in other matters; well, for the most part. The SEC has in the past spoken with one voice. In this situation that's what we see happening now. You don't see AD's making statements (IE: test results) because it's a conference wide decision. You don't see SEC AD's making a lot of statements right now because, once again, the SEC wants to speak as one voice.

If you look at the ACC you see some reporting from schools, others have said little to nothing.

And, btw, when was the last time AL.com actually broke news? In all seriousness, they are usually as many as three to five days late UNLESS they happened to catch a tweet or blurb on a Bama site. (See the $4.99 thread about AL.com and text.)

The point I've been trying to make all along here is you will hear the news when they make the final decision. Until then, all you can count on is what's being learned and heard around the SEC and UA.

Well....somewhat ok?..lol
Might be 3-5 days late...but news travels slow here in the mountains of TN....

See how the administration treats us as wego forward...
Conversation to be updated...lol

I would expect all the schools to take a hit in the wallet this season and the the other sports programs within the schools that depend on football dollars will have to suffer the most. The smart folks will really take another look at their plans going forward.

It was not curiosity that killed the goose who laid the golden egg, but an insatiable greed that devoured common sense.
