🏈 Cash sought for Cam Newton

http://www2.oanow.com/blogs/aublog/...sought-during-newtons-recruitment-ar-1053673/

UPDATE: A source close to Auburn's athletic department with knowledge of the situation told the Opelika-Auburn News that "there are no NCAA allegations against any member of Auburn's coaching staff or anyone associated with Auburn in the recruitment of Cam Newton."

Another recent update was that Mullen and Meyer had spoken at length about the situation. Mullen considered it a dead issue and URBAN MEYER encouraged Bond to go to the NCAA, which seems fine, he also encouraged him to go to the media. Class guy, Urban. Sorry you couldn't convince him to stay. After this, you should probably be glad your team has little to no chance of making it to Atlanta. If you make it and we get by Bama, I feel very, very sorry for your defense.

And Porter, I follow you but there's just nothing of substance to these reports that are indicative of CAM actually doing anything wrong. I can call Alabama and say I represent Ingram and it will take $200k for him to come back next year; it doesn't make it true. I understand the hype--he's the best player on one of the best teams. As a rival fan, I fully expected you guys to eat this up--hell most Auburn fans did the same thing about Ingram and Julio over the last two years. I just truly don't see anything coming of this, at least not relevant to our program or his eligibility. If Cam were in any hot water, that would've already been clearly reported. Chizik wouldn't continue playing Cam if he felt there were any real chance the NCAA would rule him ineligible. If it turns out that Cam had involvement and Auburn knew about it, then of course we should be hit. I just don't see it happening. This information has been known since December, at least by State. Auburn was notified during the summer when they discussed it with their compliance board and the SEC. This seems as much like sour grapes today as it did a week ago when it was brought up in a different thread here. Someone at State is pissed they didn't land him, Meyer is pissed he didn't keep him. Until Information is shown to the contrary, that's where I stand. I'll allow the media their "guilty until proven innocent" reports. It is a shame that this story has caught the legs it currently has. There is nothing to indicate anyone but some jackass former State player has done anything wrong.

I'll believe it either way when something happens or does not happen. Either someone sought and got money or someone didnt. Anything now is pure speculation on either side. Sure the Aurbun faithful want to believe all is good. But as a Bama fan with the Julio/Ingram issue last year and Marcel this year I know I was like eh nothing to see here. But I was thinking CRAP, We're screwed!!!!!

He'll be declared inelgible, forfeit games they won, and he'll magically be elgible for the iron Bowl. ;)

^^ lets be honest here, the story blowing up means nothing, "journalists" report junk all the time...I'm too lazy to post examples, but don't think I need to.

Now, could it have legs, yes. Having the NCAA snooping around, not a good thing. I'm gonna go out on a big limb here (cause I'm 6'5"), I'd be willing to wager nothing happens on this.

I am glad, for whatever reason, he is being allowed to continue to play. Should we play well and win the Iron Bowl, I don't want to hear anyone say, "if only CAM!!!!". I can't handle the McCoy crap all over again.

I don't know if there is any problem for AU or not but distractions are never good this time of year and this is a distraction. If you don't believe this can be a problem, see Alabama circa 2008. A lot of comparisons can be made.

I got in the car after work, turned on the Nashville sports radio call-in show. Not five minutes went by before a barner called in and blamed the entire situation on Saban. According to this guy, Saban and ESPN conspired to bring forth these false allegations. Apparently, they've been sitting on this for quite some time and have been waiting for just the right moment to go public with it in an attempt to distract the team from its run toward the National Championship and derail Newton's Heisman campaign. Then he assured the listeners that this ruse would be unsuccessful and would become a catalyst to unify the team and make them stronger than ever.

There you go.

If Bama cant win it all, I want AU to run the table and beat the crap out of Boise in the NCG. Then 2 years later, I want it to be stripped because Cam was a hired gun. How big of a tease would that be? I really hope it goes down.

ETA: "keep it down home cuz"
Where's ole Corky these days anyway?

Duder. Julio and Ingram were ruled ineligible and reinstated by the NCAA after the paid back all ruled illegal benefits back on their fishing trip if memory serves.

Now if Cam is indeed innocent, the best move they could make would be to rule him ineligible for illegal contact with an agent and do their best to prove he didnt recieve any benefits. The fact that he had contact with an agent is a given.

I agree Porter. First, why is an attorney retained so quickly? If it's all on the up and up why is an attorney needed? Second, you didn't really expect Chizik to say anything differently tonight did you? What else would he say? Lastly the NCAA doesn't waste its time on just any investigation. They come with notepads and leave with boxes.

I'm pretty sure if Cecil had taken money he wouldn't have turned over all of his financial records. Given what all is at stake, there is ample reason for a father to retain an attorney. He wants to protect his church and protect his son. The school's legal team wouldn't be involved in helping Cecil because he isn't the client.

Again, to reiterate--at this point the NCAA is not investigating Auburn or Cameron Newton. They are investigating the agent and what his interaction with MSU was. A link hasn't shown up between the agent and Auburn. It seems that after eleven months if there were evidence to the contrary it would've surfaced by now. This is a variant of the same rumor making rounds here recently that Auburn donated money to Cecil's church. Now it was MSU was asked to donate money.

Again, how many times do we see this? Alabama fans should be accutely aware that when you are on top people will throw out allegations that seem logical to smeer someone's name and get their name in the press. An agent will gain recognition by stuff like this. He has nothing to lose, yet.

Maybe it turns out he's telling the truth but as it stands I'm just not concerned. If he was after money UF has numerous boosters that would've paid to keep him around.

The fact that he had contact with an agent is not even a fact at this point. Anyone can call and say they are representing someone. As of today I am officially representing Marcell Dareus. I'll call LSU and ask for an insane amount of money in return for his absence Saturday.

If there was much substance to this it would've come to a head long before now. This took place in December, Auburn was made aware in July and discussed it with the SEC, compliance board, etc. I know, I'm wasting my cyber-breath discussing it but I just don't put any more creedence into this than any of the other rumors that exist in college football. I believe you are right about Ingram and Julio but they never actually missed gametime because of it if my horrible memory serves me correctly.

Newton's father turned in his financial records over to the NCAA two weeks ago. Maybe something has raised suspicion over the last two weeks that has given this story legs. Why did ESPN decide to report this story now when this story has been floating around since this past summer? I don't have any answers but this story cannot simply be written off like Duder is trying to do.

Everyone needs to consider that the reporters who first broke this story are NOT knee-jerk reaction guys. Also, everyone needs to remember the time line. The NCAA is not beginning an investigation, they have been investigating this since before the summer. This is not a message board rumor, but a news story being reported by highly respected news outlets not solely devoted to sports. People who do their research and have been doing their research for more than today. Finebaum has been looking into this for ten days and it just broke today. There is more to this, it may involve multiple players, and (no matter some AU beat writer says) it could damage AU football for the foreseeable future.

You guys who want Auburn to go down over this sound just like what you would call low class coming from another fan base. Personally I hope that the Newton Family retained the lawyers to persue a defamation suit against the Rogers guy and wins enough money to fix up their church and never have to worry about money again. Cam seems to have learned a lesson from his days at Florida and seems for all the world to be a stand up kid. If its true, SHAME on the Newton family.

As for why its blowing up now? Seriously? Cam Newton is the hottest thing in football right now and drives ratings and clicks and everything a "news" organization wants. Why wouldnt you wait and bring this story out now that Newton leads the Heisman race. It makes for sensational news.

I would rather have Auburn at full strength and dismantle them on the feild in a couple weeks. It'll be a much more thorough beating that way.

Flame away,
T

First, let me say that I hope nothing comes of this. I want Auburn at full strength and ranked #1 or #2 for the Iron Bowl. Despite Cam's own trumpeting, "I can't be stopped," these kind of rivalry games bring out all kinds of heroes and I think our guys will be up to the task of stopping Cam. Second, a previous post stated and I agree that if we don't make the BCSNCG, then I wouldn't mind seeing AU go against Boise and beat the living snot out of those smurfs.

Having said all of that, what stands out to me, is;
- why has Cecil Newton already retained a lawyer?
- if Cecil and his church are so poor, how are they affording this lawyer?
- if financial records were turned over two weeks ago, why is this story heating up now?
- if this story has been around and "investigated" and cleared by Auburn's compliance department, why is ESPN running with it now all of a sudden?
- IF Cecil did receive cash, would he just deposit all of it in his church's account anyway?

I will also add that on Finebaum last night, he mentioned that while Mullen was on months ago and a caller asked how they lost Newton, Mullen was visibly disturbed and Finebaum had the impression that there was more to it than just Auburn beat them out - and that was months ago.

Maybe the worst thing for AU is this: now the NCAA is snooping. What will they find? How often does the NCAA go snooping and leave with nothing? Who knows the whole story and the real reasons why Cam ended up on the Plains and not in Stinkville? But we all know, the NCAA will not stop looking until they find out.

In this day and age, you would hope people would be smarter than all of this. I really hope nothing comes of it more than just being a distraction. We as Bama fans know we need Auburn at full strength and ranked high for the Iron Bowl if we are to make it all the way. Besides, I want to see our guys rise to the challenge and be the first to stop Cam.

This smells something like the Albert Means case. How much money did he and his mom receive? Not a dime! As I recall, his mom was sitting on the porch of her government subsidized home giving an interview. It was the greed of two men that ruined Means and hammered Alabama. It was a crusty old booster that reached deep into his pockets and paid the coaches of Means. We denied the allegations but it all came out in the wash. This will all come out too. Newtons' parents may not have received a dime but the reported agent kept it all to himself without family knowledge. If its true, the hammer from the NCAA will fall and fall HARD. I hope it isn't true either. I want them at full strength when we spank that AZZ on Nov. 26th. RTR!!!!

The story is catching legs now because Auburn is currently slated to play for the title and the Heisman more or less already has Cam's name on it. The newer reports are saying that Urban Meyer encouraged Bonds to go to the media and the NCAA with the information against Mullen's wishes.

The reason I'm "writing this off" is nothing at all indicates Auburn had any involvement. To be frank, there has been no information that shows Cam actually had any contact with this agent. The NCAA's current involvement in this shouldn't concern Auburn fans because they're not looking into us. They're looking into the claims that someone claiming to represent Cam called Mississippi State asking for loot. I also have faith, and a bit of frustration, in our compliance department. They have been overzealous at times and many Auburn people feel they have hampered our ability to go after players in the past. I feel confident that if they looked into the situation and let Chizik play him. Our NCAA Compliance Director is very much by the book. Again, I realize why rival fans would jump all over this. I also realize that the media jumps all over these things because controversy brings viewers, readers, etc. and that's how they get paid. The main point I keep coming back to that makes me unconcerned is the fact that the articles do not implicate Auburn in any wrong-doing, nor do they discuss an actual link between Cam/Cecil and Kenny Rogers. "A man claiming to represent Newton..." Rogers has already been investigated for lying about his representation of athletes that had nothing do with him. If they ever actually point to Auburn and say that there was wrong-doing, I will have no problem admitting I was wrong. As it stands, it seems like much ado about nothing.

I hate to keep referencing Ingram but earlier this year there were stories flying about the NCAA investigating Ingram for something he had already gotten approval for! Just because a writer puts out a piece that seems to have a compelling argument, doesn't mean there is anything to it.

Let me say for the record I do not feel Saban had anything to do with this. I have only spoken to one person that feels a "certain group of people" are behind it. I think it is pretty obvious at this point that Bama doesn't have anything to do with it. If I were to think anyone Bama-related were behind something like this I would not at all think Saban or his staff were behind it. I wouldn't put it past a booster at any school (ours included) to mud-sling. Yes, at times Saban strikes me as an ass but not in the way that would make me think he would want an edge by trying to get someone on probation. He's driven to win but I just don't see him cutting that kind of corner to get there. I actually respect Saban and have read his leadership book that was written shortly before taking over at Bama.
