I see it as lateral by title only!! Miami has some rebuilding to do and who would want to be around something like that, when your boss may not see the end of his first contract. I love Dabo to death, but Clemson is hurting. Best to go somewhere where you can learn from the best and get yourself in the best spot to move up the career ladder as a HC in college or a position coach in the NFL.

The only move I've seen, a move I would call questionable, was Steele to Clemson. Although, I do understand his reasoning.

I thought Middleton's move to Duke was a step down. BUT, considering his wife's health who wouldn't do the same?

FWIW, we haven't lined up in a shotgun formation a lot this year.

Pistol? Yes.

Remember, you have to credit that formation and scheme for the success we've seen in our running game.

I understand that, and I think that is what throws me off too. We just didn't run the ball in a traditional way this year. I like Alabama to run the Pro-Style offense with having a FB and TE blocking, running it from the I-Formation or even the Ace Formation.

I know we were successful in the Pistol Formation as well. But I just don't think the play action works as well from the Pistol. In '09 we ran the ball 601 times for 3011 yds and 31 TD's. This year we only ran it 467 times for 2378 yds and 30 TD's. We brought back the two best RB's in college football yet we ran the ball less this year than last year.

I know there are a ton of factors that come into play such as the O-line, teams stacking the box, more experience in the QB/WR positions but we just didn't capitalize like I felt we were capable of.

Just out of curiosity, have we even attempted to recruit in the FB position?

I believe you misunderstand Saban's philosophy with his coaches.

Here's another little jewel...a quote from Stoutland as this press conference.

“This is a great opportunity to come to the University of Alabama and coach the offensive line,” said Stoutland. “I’m leaving behind a great group of young men at Miami, but this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I’m really excited to get started and anxious to begin teaching. We want to finish up the recruiting class strong and then go rapidly into spring football. When Coach Saban called me and asked if I would be interested, I was excited. The first thing I thought of was winning. I think anybody that follows college football realizes Coach Saban’s record of success, what he’s been able to accomplish in college football, and I’m all about that. On top of that, being able to coach with some of the coaches that I’ve been around before in Jim McElwain, Bobby Williams, Sal Sunseri, and I have also worked with Mike Vollmar. These are people who have been important in my life and to be able to come back and work together means a lot. We are really happy to be in Tuscaloosa and I have to say my wife fell in love with Tuscaloosa within 12 hours. We are excited to be here and I can’t wait to get started.”

Sounds like a vertical move to me. At least, it sure seems that's the say Stoutland looked at the offer.

Why would we recruit a position we don't use? TE or H-Back shifts into the backfield for a blocking back. We very rarely run out of the I anymore. But to answer your question I think Mike Marrow was the last back you could consider a Fullback that we recruited. I think Fowler could be used as a Fullback in certain situations (goal line, short yardage).
