Del Rio admitted he'd " totally sandbagged" the week in practice. He didn't watch much A&M film because he figured he wouldn't play in his second game at Alabama.

Of course, McCarron stayed health and led the Tide to a 49-42 shootout win over Johnny Manziel.

That didn't change all season, either. Sims played backup duty in games already in control and Del Rio never saw action in an Alabama jersey.

Still, he thought he deserved to get a scholarship.

"So, I had the exit meeting with Saban and I told him I wanted to transfer," Del Rio said. "He said why? Told him 'You're not going to put me on scholarship.'

Del Rio said Saban told him they couldn't have six quarterbacks on scholarship.

"I said it's not my fault that I beat out five of your guys," Del Rio said. "(Saban) didn't like that. He got pretty upset about that. They weren't going to put me on scholarship, so I left."

Uhhh, bullshit. His daddy didn't like Lane. There are no if's, and's, or but's about why he left.

Beat out five guys...okay.

Which explains why he never would have started... anywhere... you have to have the work ethic to put in your time EVEN when you're not the man. Why would you expect to be on scholarship when you don't do what's required of you?? Funny story about his overthrow though...

Hitting Saban is a pretty funny story. These are the stories I'd love to know about as you can just replay them in your mind and they'll crack you up, even if you weren't there.

Yeah, similar sentiments on the lack of game prep for A&M. So you came in wanting to compete with the best, yet you fail to prepare like the best. Clearly had a sense of entitlement if he felt he should be on scholarship. I don't recall him sniffing anywhere close to being on the field, so to say he beat out a number of others sounds a little far fetched. Oh well, he has his stories like Blake Barnett has his, as well as Saban has his.

Are you disputing he was the backup?

He started at Florida in 2 different seasons.

Expecting 18-22 year old kids to understand this idea is nearly impossible. A lot more Tony Brown's than Barrett Jones's. It is what it is

I referenced that statement while laughing at "he beat out five guys." He was running the 3's on A-day behind AJ and Coop. Blake had the start on the other side. So, at best, coming out of spring he was 4th on the depth chart.

BUT, he beat out five guys ... right.

Considering he didn't play a snap and Blake Sims took all the backup snaps? Yeah, I'd say that'd be a pretty good assumption.

As I recall Del Rio didn't play a snap the entire '13 season. He enrolled in Jan. of '13, didn't play a snap, then demands a scholly from Saban? He doesn't get his way and leaves in Jan of '14.

So yeah...I'm not only disputing he was the back-up, I'm calling bullshit on that one as well. It was all about daddy and Lane.

AJ never played a snap in '09. Was he the backup?

I've heare people make that claim, that he won the job by the time the Natty came around. I have no clue though because neither Saban, Greg or AJ have said that publicly. All I know is Star took all the snaps during the 09 season that Greg didn't. Literally NO ONE but Luke del Rio has made the claim that he was the "real" backup. Odd that the "real" backup with a rich daddy would leave instead of winning the starting job the next year, dont you think? You think Saban is NOT going to give a kid that's either QB 1 or QB 2 a scholly?

I don't believe Luke was happy anywhere he went. Too many transfers to believe he was committed just to the game of football.

His dad was and is a multi-millionaire, so I don't understand the significance of his point? Pretty sure he wasn't driving a VW Beetle around campus.

My point was financially he wasn't hurting for a scholarship.
