šŸ€ Camping World Maui Invitational: Bama wins 5th place after defeating Providence Weds night

It was the best game so far. Hopefully when things are tighter and not going their way they learned through the Sanford game to keep playing hard and good things will happen.

Lets face it the difference between Sanford and UNLV/Providence was huge. Can they find their rhythm and show enough improvement to close the gap with someone like Sanford. They sure showed much more energy after that first game. Also, to play 3 games in 3 days shows some depth.

Glad they did not fold after that first performance and that was the low point of the season :).
Well obviously I meant Stanford not Sanford although I did make the mistake twice. Tough getting old smh....

Well Stanford shot out of their shoes too at like 52%, and we didn't at like 36%. That was the difference. We did lack cohesion and some fight, but it's very tough to beat a team shooting over 50% no matter who you are.

Crimson Tide uses hot second-half shooting to capture fifth place overall at the Maui Invitational

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The No. 25 Alabama men’s basketball team used balanced scoring along with a dominating rebounding performance to muscle past Providence, 88-71, in the fifth-place game of the 2020 Camping World Maui Invitational on Wednesday night. It was the second consecutive victory for the Crimson Tide, as it improves to 3-1 on the season.

For a second-straight contest, guard John Petty Jr. led the Tide’s offensive attack with 16 points on the night, which was played on his birthday. Guards Jaden Shackelford and Joshua Primo added 15 each, while Herbert Jones (11) and Jahvon Quinerly (10) also contributed on the offensive end of the floor. Jones also led the Tide with eight rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals in his 32 minutes of action.

However, it was the performance on the glass that helped lead the Tide to the victory. Alabama outrebounded Providence 48-28 in the contest, which included an 18-8 edge on the offensive glass. As a result, Alabama had a 21-9 advantage in second chance points.
I thought our effort was a lot better. I think we’ve made a big improvement over the three days we were here and that’s what we are trying to do is get better. If it took a loss to Stanford to get our guys where they needed to be, then that’s what it took. So, only three teams leave here with a 2-1 record and we are one of them. I think we played really good basketball the last two nights and got better every single game out. Tonight, we didn’t start off great. They hit some tough shots, but our guys just stayed the course. After going down 8-0, I think we went on a 17-3 run and never gave up the lead from there. I told our guys we are going to have to outrebound them tonight in order to win and they answered the bell. I thought our guys stepped up in areas they needed to step up. It’s Petty’s birthday and he led in scoring, but we also had two other guys with 15. I think Primo is getting more and more comfortable in the offense and playing high-level basketball. I don’t know what it was against Stanford – we didn’t play hard like we needed to, but I think we are clicking now. ~Coach Nate Oats

Next Up
  • The Tide will have a 10-day break between games due to final exams before returning to action on Dec. 12 when it takes on the Clemson Tigers in the Holiday Hoopsgiving event in Atlanta. The tip time and television channel will be announced soon.

Cold shooting in the first half, they were on fire for the 2nd. Had a lull there for about 6 minutes, letting Providence cut the lead down to 11. Herb struggled at PG with turnovers but still played solid every where else....like this team, I believe when they jell with more experience together in a game they'll be even better. Pinpointing the differences from years past, with CNO, they seem to have their shit together, more crisp passes, good ball movement, looked better rebounding last night too.

Agree with most but sometimes their passing is not crisp. It seems like a square peg round hole trying to make Herb Jones be the PG. Maybe Oats is trying to create a mismatch but Jones ball handling skills just are not good enough. Neither is Petty for that matter. He dribbles out of control sometimes. Oats seems to be ok with anyone bringing the ball up but you can see the ones that it just does not look natural for them. Seems like he has that same mentality about shooting from the 3 point line as well. Anyone has been told it is ok but some really should not be trying it. He does have more of them that can so may still be a recruiting cycle away from truly having all 5 players capable of hitting 3's at a reasonable percentage. Long season so they may get there this year.

One thing that I've been pleased with is, while they have been sloppy at times, they've cut down on turnovers compared to last year. Now, comparing last year's first 4 games and this year's is a bit of apples and oranges... especially since last year was year 1 under a new system. But, there are a lot of new faces on this squad too. Anyway, for the comparison...

I happen to agree with you and had to triple take when I watched these games to make sure my eyes weren't tricking me seeing Herbert (I call him that because he said he prefers it because it was his grandpa's name) bring the ball down the court. I also think it fits our game because we're not looking to drive the lane with the point. It's more about passing the ball to the open man and getting a good look from three. We have some guys that can slash like Shackelford and Quinnerly, but the more I thought about it, I didn't see much of an issue with Herbert bringing the ball up court. NOW, that being said, not sure it's the best thing when a full court press is being put on us, because you're right, I don't think he has the skill to dribble in and out of traffic. So there may be a switch if that happens. A non-three point shooting guy bringing the ball up to get it out of his hands and into a shooter's hands isn't a bad idea, if that's in fact the way they're looking at it too.

I don't believe the best plan is having Herbert bring the ball up the court when Bama is playing someone that is somebody.

It is likely Coach Oats is simply experimenting with different groupings. If Jones could do it it would certainly create interesting matchups. Just not sure he can pull it off, same with his offensive game. He has improved but still marginal on the offensive end. He is going to give you all he has and he has absolutely improved but it is another level that I am talking about. I still love the kid and the effort he gives. A lot of good he brings to the team so I am glad he is on the court for Bama.
