šŸ€ Camping World Maui Invitational: Bama wins 5th place after defeating Providence Weds night

All in all, a much better performance, albeit against an inferior team. Shot selection and defense was improved, but nowhere near where it needs to be. For a team that practices every day against constant 3's, we sure do give up a lot of open 3 looks. That little Grill SOB kept UNLV in it for most of the night. Reese has got to find a way to add more when he's on the court. Herb played really well on the offensive end tonight. Good to see Petty hit some and that'll hopefully get him going now. The officials were great. Alabama only committed 10 fouls for the game. When was the last time that happened? The Tide had 21 assists and just 11 turnovers. Not shabby.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Alabama connected on a season-best15 three-pointers and scored a season-high 86 points total as it blew past UNLV, 86-74, in the second round of the Camping World Maui Invitational on Tuesday night. With the win, the Crimson Tide (2-1) moves into the fifth-place game where it will take on the Providence Friars (2-1) who defeated Davidson in its second round matchup.

Alabama was led by guard John Petty Jr.'s 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. He also had six assists compared to one turnover in his nearly 34 minutes of action. The Huntsville, Ala., native led five UA players who reached double digits on the night as Jahvon Quinerly (19), Herbert Jones (16), Jaden Shackelford (13) and Joshua Primo (11) all contributed on the offensive end of the floor.

The Crimson Tide's offense was efficient throughout the contest, as UA connected on 48 percent from the field, 38 percent from beyond the arc, hit 15 three-pointers (15-of-40) and had 21 assists on its 29 makes with only 11 turnovers.

UNLV was led by Caleb Grill's game-high 27 points to lead all scorers.

Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments

  • "It was a much better effort tonight. We stressed closing the first half and opening the second half. It was a big last four, first four because we ended the half on a 12-6 run to even the game and started the second half on a 6-0 run which forced them to call a timeout. So it was an 18-6 run in all which was much better than (Monday) night. Our big thing is we just need to play harder. I thought some of our guys are figuring out how hard they have to play in a Division I basketball game to get a win. You can't afford to relax or you're giving up a wide-open three. I thought our guys played well and it was nice to finally make some shots. Petty was able to get out of his slump and I'm really happy with the overall game he played. Herb played better than he's played and I thought Jordan Bruner was really good, especially on defense. James Rojas gave us good minutes inside in the second half. A lot of good efforts from our guys tonight."

I mentioned this weeks ago, but I felt that we had enough shooters that on pretty much any given night, there'd be a hot hand or two, even if everyone else was ice cold. 2nd game of the year, and that theory was tested and sunk. And man, there were some ugly shots out of those 29 3 point attempts. Meanwhile, it felt like Stanford was making everything, like they were just toying with Bama.

And I wasn't going to mention it after my comment about "I don't complain about the play-by-play and color analysts" but I can't help it. @TerryP I know I said Walton was unbearable, and he is, but holy shit that guy last night was maybe worse. I know it's gotta be difficult to call a game from your basement or whatever and not in person, but at least try to talk about the game. He was like the crazy guy that sits down beside you on the transit bus, and won't shut up for 20 minutes as he skips from topic to topic and asks and answers his own questions. If he's back on there tonight, and I'm sure he will be, I'm going to have to go to great lengths to sync up Chris Stewart and Bryan Passink, which is an enourmous pain in the ass to keep synced when I have YouTube TV.
We had 2 like that doing a bama football game ( ky?)...
Was awful...

Everytime I read a comment about announcers I have to wonder...

If you have the ability to shut out your wife, how do you not have the ability to shut out a guy talking during a football game?

Then again, I may have an advantage over you guys here. My MPD allows inner-dialogue about what's going on; can't hear 'em.

We have been conditioned to listen to the announcers.....and conditioned to not listen to wives,...

i dont listen to radio broadcast when at game.... but i can see the field and action...
The tv production jumps all over the place...fans, sideline person....etc..
Hard to watch without audio

remember when they televised a nfl game without announcers.....was hard to watch.....

Tried to catch the first half before heading to work this a.m. (ESPN had the replay on the guide for 4:00 am on ESPN2), flipped it on and they had Davidson & Providence replay on instead. šŸ˜– Thanks for these post filling me in. šŸ‘

It was up on their website around 2ish (ET.)

It was the best game so far. Hopefully when things are tighter and not going their way they learned through the Sanford game to keep playing hard and good things will happen.

Lets face it the difference between Sanford and UNLV/Providence was huge. Can they find their rhythm and show enough improvement to close the gap with someone like Sanford. They sure showed much more energy after that first game. Also, to play 3 games in 3 days shows some depth.

Glad they did not fold after that first performance and that was the low point of the season :).
