šŸ€ Camping World Maui Invitational: Bama wins 5th place after defeating Providence Weds night

The Bama playmakers have to show up in a game like this. Petty and Shackleford are not getting it done. No excuse for these guys that have experience. They are better than what they are showing. If I am not mistaken Herb Jones has more points than they do.

Well that was just an embarrassing performance. It's just the 2nd game, so I'm not going to get too riled up over it, but disappointing is an understatement. Bama looked unprepared and uninterested. Was hoping the defense would take a big step this year, but tonight, it was as bad as it was last year. They killed us on the boards. Shooting 7 for 29 from 3? 36% from the floor? And most of the misses were not even close. The most disappointing thing of all though, to me, is how soft we are going to the rim. Looks like a women's team inside the circle, minus the higher FG %. You can't be giving out blue collar hard hat awards after games while looking that weak at the basket.

I know Oats will be pissed. Will be interested to see how they respond tomorrow night.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The No. 25 Alabama men's basketball team dropped an 82-64 decision to Stanford in the opening round of the Camping World Maui Invitational on Monday night. With the loss, the Crimson Tide (1-1) moves into the consolation bracket where it will take on the UNLV Runnin' Rebels (0-2) Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. CT (9:30 p.m. ET).

Alabama was led for a second straight game by guard Jahvon Quinerly, who collected team highs of 14 points and three steals. Jaden Shackelford was the only other UA player to reach double digits, finishing with 10 points on the night.

Stanford was led by freshman star Ziaire Williams' 19 points as he led four Cardlinal players in double figures.

Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments

  • "Obviously a disappointing first game for us here at the Maui Invitational. I thought (Stanford) played much harder than we did. That's on us as coaches to have our team prepared and play better. They outrebounded us by 16 and that does not bode well. They shot 53 percent from three compared to our 24 percent. They took better shots than we did. They are a very good team, but we have got to bring a better effort than that. We were in the game the first 16 minutes and it was back-and-forth game, but they closed the half on a run. We began the second half and closed it within seven at the under 16 timeout but it went from seven to 12 in like 30 seconds and we could never get it back. I am really disappointed in our play and we have to respond and try to salvage this thing by playing a lot better tomorrow night."

Team Stats

  • Shackelford reached double-figure scoring for the 17th straight games dating back to last season.
  • Alabama forced Stanford into 22 turnovers on the night to result in a 21-14 advantage in points off turnovers
  • The Tide finished with 14 fast break points compared to seven for the Cardinal
  • Stanford owned a big advantage on the glass, outrebounding Alabama 47-31
  • Alabama shot just over 35 percent from the field, while Stanford shot 51 percent from the field.

First Half

  • The game was tight early in the opening stanza as the two teams swapped the lead four times and had six ties over the first 15 minutes of action
  • Stanford closed the half on a 12-2 run over the final four-plus minutes to take a 41-29 lead into the locker room
  • Alabama missed its final eight field goals and hist just two of its final 14 shots from the floor to close the first 20 minutes of action

Second Half

  • The Crimson Tide jumped out to a quick start in the second half and cut Stanford's lead to seven, 49-42, with 15:21 remaining
  • However, a three-pointer by Bryce Wills sparked a Cardinal 10-0 run over the next 2:28 to increase the lead to 17, 59-42, with 12:43 left
  • Stanford led by as many as 24 points before settling for the 18-point victory

I was in and out watching and it was sloppy boring ball to me. I still saw some of that same ole drive the lane lazy kickout pass bullshit that we do to turn the ball over what feels like ten times a game. Herbert Jones is the only guy I see that has elevated his game, and maybe Quinnerly.

It's one game of course, and during a year where practicing and prep wasn't made easy. If we are gonna live and die by transition and the three though, we better pick it up. Our team is new, atleast I have that feeling, and we will get it together. Hell, Kentucky just lost to Richmond, and Virginia to some other small school, so I'm not really concerned. Although, I was excited to watch us play and it was a disappointment.

I mentioned this weeks ago, but I felt that we had enough shooters that on pretty much any given night, there'd be a hot hand or two, even if everyone else was ice cold. 2nd game of the year, and that theory was tested and sunk. And man, there were some ugly shots out of those 29 3 point attempts. Meanwhile, it felt like Stanford was making everything, like they were just toying with Bama.

And I wasn't going to mention it after my comment about "I don't complain about the play-by-play and color analysts" but I can't help it. @TerryP I know I said Walton was unbearable, and he is, but holy shit that guy last night was maybe worse. I know it's gotta be difficult to call a game from your basement or whatever and not in person, but at least try to talk about the game. He was like the crazy guy that sits down beside you on the transit bus, and won't shut up for 20 minutes as he skips from topic to topic and asks and answers his own questions. If he's back on there tonight, and I'm sure he will be, I'm going to have to go to great lengths to sync up Chris Stewart and Bryan Passink, which is an enourmous pain in the ass to keep synced when I have YouTube TV.

I watched the entire game and it was tough to watch. Looking at the score sheet one of the things that jumps out to me is Petty did not score a point. I thought he did but knew he did not score much. This from your Senior that is 2nd team all sec. One other thing I saw in one tv camera shot with him on the bench was his body language. Heck the whole team for that matter but one of your Senior leaders has to be better than that. That is flat out not acceptable. That will not help his NBA draft status.

Gotta turn things around and fast. Hopefully the team is embarrassed by that performance.

Not sure what score sheet you looked at but Petty scored 7 pts with 6 rebounds. Certainly not his best game but he did lead the team in rebounds.

I was referring back to the score sheet that was posted above. I thought Petty had scored also but I did not see his name in what was posted. Just summed up what was posted and it looks like some names were missing.
