🏈 Calloway de-commits from Bama; Swann chooses Georgia over Tide

Im worried that Brent just has superior physical ability at RB, but with little technique as compared to him at LB.

Itd be like Rolando McClain going to Auburn as a RB. We all know hes a great LBer, but is there any doubt he couldve appeared to do well as a RB coming out of highschool?

My worry is that Auburn is playing him for a fool and ultimatly intend to make him a LB despite knowing that he will probably fail at RB.

Have you seen our RB depth chart? Fannin graduates. That leaves Dyer and McCalebb that have any game experience. He will get his shot at RB; we have far too many needs to fill to BS a kid.

I agree. Everything is not always as it seems, but I think he will get his shot at RB at Auburn.

I can understand him wanting to go to RB but damn when you're a 5 Star Linebacker, that just doesn't seem smart to me. Its whatever tho, he'll be regretting it every end of November.

Even with losing Calloway, we'll still be ranked #2 or #3. It sucks to lose such a good prospect at linebacker, but one person hasn't made this class since Shula was here.

We have a Junior RB projected as a first rounder this year, and likely the same next year...our RBs are what the pros are looking for. If he did not think that he could beat out this caliber of RB for playing time at Alabama, how could he expect to make it into the pros? Has this 5 star written off trying to making it to the pros? Surely he does not think that he can spend his College days "playing" RB and then at the end say "alright, I'm now ready to switch to LB in the Pros."

"...Auburn had made a strong late push with the offer of playing running back, which he feels is his best position."

Perhaps he can enlighten the rest of college football who assessed him as best at Linebacker.

Five-star recruit Brent Calloway switches commitment from Alabama to Auburn

While Auburn went through its final BCS title game practice Saturday, it got some good recruiting news from two states away.

Brent Calloway, a five-star linebacker/running back from Russellville, Ala., switched his commitment from Alabama to the Auburn during the U.S. Army All-American Game in San Antonio, Texas.

Rivals.com ranks the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Calloway as the No. 2 linebacker in the country and the No. 1 player in Alabama.

But he said he switched his commitment so he can play running back at Auburn. Calloway ran for 1,968 yards and 25 touchdowns his senior season at Russellville, playing sparingly at linebacker.

“I’ve seen the depth at linebacker at Alabama, and it’s stiff,” he said during an interview with Rivals. “And there are guys who are twice my size, and who have played this position for so long now. So that’s why I’m making a point where I say, hey, I should just go (to Auburn) and play running back.”

Calloway roomed with cornerback Jonathan Rose in San Antonio. Rose, the No. 3 recruit in Alabama, committed to Auburn in August and plans to enroll early to go through spring drills.

Auburn now has 17 commitments for 2011. National Signing Day is Feb. 2.

Wow. That's kind of sad.

This whole thing reminds me of the Russell Shepard situation from a couple of years ago. Remember how Shepard wanted to play QB at Texas, but the Longhorns already had Garrett Gilbert committed at QB and recruited Shepard as a Safety? He ended up at LSU because “The Hat” promised to play him at QB and now he is a Wideout at LSU.

I guess my point is that I just don’t understand why every coach doesn’t just tell every recruit they can play whatever position they want? It seems like there is no downside to telling a guy you will play him at one position and then switching him once he gets on campus.

He wants to play RB and RB only, not LB. We told him hey you might be able to have a look at RB, but ultimately, you're going to play where we need you, which will probably be LB because you are better suited for LB. (I am assuming, from what I've read and what he said on his interview...)

Auburn tells him, you can come in and play RB and play it immediately. He doesn't want to have to earn his keep so to speak. Completely acceptable, I wouldn't want him if he's not willing to sacrifice for the greater good of the team.

Bye bye Brent, Hello Dee!

He wants to play RB and only RB because he didn't want to have to earn his spot on the team as a RB and he also saw our talent and depth at RB then he looked at our depth at LB and is scared of competition, so Auburn told him "There's not the competition here, so come to us and you can play whatever you want".

See ya later Brent.

Although the kid is talented and all that had he stayed committed to us he wouldn't have made our class and his going to Auburn won't break our class. We have a solid class and plenty of recruits out there that could improve our class. The only part of the Brent thing that confuses me is that he has stated several times "I'm a lifelong Alabama fan", but then commits to Auburn?

The FSU kid I think was just upset that we didn't recruit him hard like some of the other schools. Have fun at FSU and unless your school somehow plays better all year you won't see Saban again except for on tv.

And a thing about Calloway wanting to play RB: if everyone and their mother thinks he's a LB but Auburn will play him at RB... it just seems like "well okay, aubs, do what you want, but he is not a RB and when it comes time to play auburn next year and so forth we just wont have to worry about him cuz he won't be any thing more than an average running back" ...Point is, I'm not worried about losing a LB to another school if the LB won't be playing his best position cuz he won't be nearly as concerning for us, but I will say I now wanna beat Calloway's a$$ the next 3 or 4 years cuz that was dirty what he did.

I guarantee you we win in the end. It's how it works, teams that cater to recruits will lose to the teams that cater to the process and the way their individual systems work. Calloway wouldn't fit at RB, so we don't want him, Dee almost didn't fit at RB (until he gained that 20 pounds over the past year) so we told him if he didn't want to be an athlete we don't want him, and he committed to Mich (obviously only to later gain weight, decommit, and commit to Bama...) I hate that we lost a very very very talented LB, but I wouldn't want an decent RB instead-- I just hope we beat Calloway's a$$ the next 3 or 4 years for doing it like he did; committing solidly in July only to change his commitment a month from signing day.

To be fair here Auburn has a much better track record at putting running backs in the league.

I don't know too much about this kid. It sounds like he played RB in high school but people think he's better suited to LB. He prefers running back. Seems like an easy decision. That he stayed committed to Alabama all along despite any reservations he may have had speaks to his loyalty to your team. It sounds like it's just not the right fit for him.

And if we're being completely honest both programs offer a shot at the BCS Championship, great facilities, and fan bases that love and support their players. If he gets to play the position he prefers and has experience playing....it seems like a no-brainer.

Win some lose some. You guys will be fine... your recruiting class is loaded.

1) I disagree with the "both programs offer BCS Championships"... obviously Auburn does [this year] as long as $cam is there, but I'm sorry, I totally refuse to believe Cheezenip wins like he has this year ever again without Cam. and 2) Auburn has a better track record of putting RBs in the league? Maybe over the past 50+ years, but come on?? Anyone with half a mind can tell that Bama will prove, over the next 10 or so years at least, to be the place to go if you're a star RB-- that's idiotic to think otherwise.
