FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) Frank Broyles is seemingly everywhere at Arkansas, and not just because his name surrounds the field inside Razorback Stadium or because of his statue outside the athletic complex that bears his name.

"His record of 144-58-5 in 19 seasons from 1958-76 is easily the winningest in school history, and he delivered the only national championship in 1964 - with Jones and former Miami and Dallas coach Jimmy Johnson among those on the roster. Former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer was an assistant coach at the time.

Switzer was one of many former Broyles assistants who went on to coaching success across the country, a group that included Johnson, Majors, former Iowa coach Hayden Fry and former Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs among many others. His coaching tree was so prolific that the Broyles Award, recognizing the top assistant football coach in college football annually, was established in 1996."

Now that is an impressive coaching tree.

Those who are attending are a tremendous tribute to what Coach Broyles has accomplished.

I glanced at two forums to see what kind of discussions they were having about Broyles. I didn't find a single thread.

If I were to go back five years and run a quick search, I know I could have found a few; all of them vilifying his contributions and role at UArk. Primarily due to basketball, their lack of success, and Nolan.

I suspect rival fans who understand the history of Arkansas, or at least have a small picture of it, will have more respect for him "hanging up his hat" than their own fan base.

True. Most of them are too young to remember how good he was as a field coach. I remember only one game where we played them during Broyle's tenure: the 1962 Sugar Bowl. Our undefeated 1961 team beat them 10-3. They featured future NFL hall of famer Lance Alworth.

I still think that Keith Jackson/Frank Broyles of the late 70's and early 80's was one of the best broadcasting duos ever. Frank wasn't the most knowledgeable and he certainly wasn't the most eloquent of announcers. But, somehow he just seemed to 'fit' perfectly with college football.
