EUGENE, Ore. | University of Alabama athletes had chances to qualify to finals in four events on Wednesday and managed to qualify the first two of them midway through the first day of competition at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. The men's 4x400-meter relay semifinal was slated to be contested later Friday evening.
A foursome running for the first time as a group in competition in the men's 4x100-meter relay advanced to Friday's final as the team of Tony Brown, Steven Gayle, Ahmed Ali and Tadashi Pinder ran 39.23 to finish third in their heat to advance with the seventh-fastest time overall of the eight qualifiers. The top two finishers in the three heats, plus the next two fastest times overall, advanced to Friday's final.
Five of the eight teams to advance to Friday's final hail from the SEC (Arkansas 2nd, Florida 3rd, LSU 4th, Texas A&M 6th and Alabama 7th). Other finalists are TCU (1st, 38.65), Southern California (5th, 39.09) and Illinois (8th, 39.39).
About 90 minutes after running his leg of the 4x100 relay, Gayle ran in the third heat of the three-section semi-final of the men's 400 meters and advanced to Friday's final with the eight-fastest time overall, breaking the tape in 45.93 to finish third in his section.
Crimson Tide junior Ahmed Ali ran in the second heat of the three-section final of the men's 200 meters and finished sixth in his section in 20.87, well off his 2015 best of 20.46.
