Forgive me if this is a repeat thread, but in light of Scarbo's article today in the Bham news, I thought it was worth discussion.

http://blog.al.com/kevin-scarbinsky/2010/02/scarbinsky_saban_statue_is_too.html

So, my thoughts on this topic are this: Scarbo brings up some good points. It's hard to say that, without gagging a little, but I'm with him on this. I tend to be a little more humble than most people, but guys like Saban are big time competitors, champions in their profession, and they get the rewards for their work. But I do think this statue is more of an attempt to lock him down and keep in T-Town. I think it COULD, COULD, backfire. What do you do if they guy is offered a job someplace that is unknown to us right now, but basically becomes the perfect fit? It's hard to imagine a better job, or the guy leaving. I certainly can't think of a place in college or pro he would go RIGHT NOW. But things change. Things happen. The NCAA could go on a rampage and target Bama again, spoiling Saban's legacy...Anything could happen is what I'm saying.

Not wanting to cry the sky is falling here. I don't think he's leaving, nor should he want to. I think he is already a legend in Tuscaloosa, and I think we'll get at least 2 more Crystal trophies in the next 8-10 years before he steps aside.

But it's a pretty big risk to take with coaches moving and changing jobs the way they do these days. If not now, when? Wait until there is an established name/school recognition. Perhaps the title this year did it. but usually a coach needs to be around a little longer first.

I'm ok with it. The statues are built for coaches who win national titles. He won one, he gets a statue. So what if he leaves? The way I see it we only have 2 options:

1) Put it up now
2) Wait until he retires entirely. That could be a while, put her up now!

We wait to put it up and he leaves for another job and the fans deface it the moment it goes up. We put it up now, he leaves and it gets defaced. I think go ahead and put it up and Saban stays as long as he wants unless some idiot booster starts glad handing a player and the NCAA comes calling and then he bolts.

Statues say LEGEND. Playing for a living legend can't help but help recruiting. Better than the Chezic Cheese Omlette offered at the Opekila IHOP.

Its a point of pride, so why deny that pride? Its recognition for CNS, so why deny recognition earned? God forbid he was struck down by lightning, but if he were we would all call it a mistake not to have put it up while he was living. Let that walk among the legends tell the truth. Put it up without delay.

Something is wrong with the boards. I have some peoples words going straight down the
page
like
this
and
it
is
annoying.

How do I fix this? It isn't doing it for everyone, but a couple of peoples post are doing that!

i think it happens when people use the quick reply option a the bottom versus using the reply option on the last post. did you do the quick reply or hit the reply button on the last post?

I did a quick reply a few mins ago and noticed I was getting the weird formating.

Jeez Louise! Would you like some cheese with that wine? The statues are nothing more than tradition for national championship winners. The statue goes up whether h is here or not. Yeah, it's a bit over the top - especially for a coach that is still here. If it were me, I would have asked them to wait, but whatever.

Look, CNS is going to leave someday. It could be when he retires after his 6th NC, BUT it could also be because South Podunk State University put together the right package and lured him away. It happens. We all like to think that he and Terry are happy here and I certainly hope they are. But you just never know how life unfolds and either way - it's OK. Why on earth worry about this now?! It is completely out of the control of any one of us. Why not just enjoy the moment and each year we do have? No matter how you slice it, CNS has rebuilt this program from the ground up and it is stronger than it has been since Bear Bryant.

So stop whining and enjoy the ride!

Hey, take it easy. It's a discussion, not a slam fest. I'm the only one that is allowed to be bitter :D.

After going through what Bama's been through since around 1999-2000, more embarrassment than anyone besides UT deserves, it sure would be a big red face to put a statue up and have the guy take off 2 years later. Or 4 years later. I personally think he stays til he retires, which, knowing Saban's competitive side, could be when he's 70. I'll take it.

I just hit "reply with quote" and got the "quick reply" box (with the quote). Now, I'll try it using the "quick reply" button.

CNS hinted right after the NCG that he would like to see something put up when he was asked about the statue and it's meaning of accomplishment. He then gave a brief pause. Figure it out for yourselves.

That being said I have no issues with it. I don't recall there ever being a stipulation where X coach must:

A) win a NC and in doing so must...

B) wait for his statue at X amount of years because....

C) the fans and media dimwits think so

The statues are there to recognize coaches who win us NCs. There must be some small print I've missed on them that says they can't have it up the preceeding season because of previous coaches. Next time I'm at BDS I'll be sure and look for said writing :D

My question is as much a Saban loves himself will this hurt his coaching ability? Will he still be gung-ho out there or will he be constantly polishing his statue.lol

I'll answer that with a question back to you. Can you cite an example of when he has coasted in anything, and anytime, ever? I truely believe that to do so would require him to change WHO he is. You see what Urban Meyers did. He almost died, and that changed him for 24 hours. All I have to say is that when he finally has to retire, I don't want to live next door to Coach Saban. His yard will make mine look like crap. NICK SABAN -- Home Owners Association MOST BEAUTIFUL YARD Champion 9 years running.

And the Home Owners Association will erect a life-sized statue to him as well. Of course it will stand only for 1 day becuase CNS will think it looks too much like a grumpy old Garden Gnome...and he'll sack it.
