TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — University of Alabama President Dr. Stuart Bell tells CBS 42 there will be football in Tuscaloosa this fall despite the Coronavirus emergency. He also says he expects 38,000 students to return for the fall semester.

ā€œAs we look forward to accomplishing another great fall semester welcoming back students and welcoming back our sports teams to be able to have competition. Those are our plans and it’s a high bar and anticipates that we will be able to meet that,ā€ Bell said.

UA, like many universities across Alabama and the United States, ended the spring semester early back in March due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, which also caused the university to cancel trips abroad.

The university has its own task force that has been monitoring the spread of the virus and when it would be safe for the majority of students and faculty to be back on campus. Bell says classrooms and dorms will be cleaned and disinfected.

ā€œWe will make sure we have it clean, but it will also be about how we accomplish social distancing to help our students. How do we make sure they have the best experience in the classroom,ā€ he said.

Dr. Bell says with students returning and Alabama football games coming back to Bryant-Denny Stadium, those are both winning combinations for the community.

ā€œWe certainly our plan is that we will have a football season and fans will be a part of it in our stadium. So we are working on that and our first games are in September. So we have time and we also know we have work to do,ā€ he said.

The fall semester classes get underway August 19.

That's okay. Students are itching to get back. No one will ever take walking across the quad for granted again.

I have only been to one game on campus but my family and I walked the quad and had a pizza picnic. Brings tears to my eyes writing about the memory and I am just a sidewalk alum. My baby was almost 4, dressed as Bama cheerleader and my wife got her to yell wĆ£r ęƤgle. I almost chocked on my pizza. Shula’s last year, so hot at that LaMonroe game my wife vomited about halfway up the ramp. A good time was had by all. Eye candy to boggle the mind and my wife pointing them out to me.

Great story. More people felt like throwing up after the next year's LaMonroe game, though.

At this point I just dont see how it wont happen. Now, I could very well see some states like Cali or NY that completely shut all sports down for the year, which will be interesting, but I fully expect most of the teams around the country to be a full go by the time August rolls around.

Seems like the Trustees will have to be satisfied there is not a high risk of major litigation if someone dies from COVID-19. Hard for me to think they will be until more information throughout the summer comes in.
