Video of Ray Rice's attack on his then-fiancee apparently was the last straw for the Baltimore Ravens, who announced Monday afternoon they've terminated the embattled running back's contract.

Rice, a three-time Pro Bowler and who helped Baltimore to a Super Bowl title in the 2012 season, was charged with third-degree aggravated assault following a Feb. 15 incident at a casino in Atlantic City, N.J., in which he alleged knocked out his then fiancé and now wife, Janay Palmer (now Janay Rice).

Brennan: Roger Goodell should act on new Ray Rice video

Initially, Rice and Palmer both were charged with simple assault. The Atlantic County prosecutor's office later dropped the charge against her. In March, Rice was indicted by a grant jury on the more serious charge of third-degree assault. The charge carried a potential sentence of three to five years in prison. After the indictment, Rice and Palmer married.

In May, Rice entered a program for first-time offenders that would clear his record of the criminal charge if he met certain conditions, including participation in counseling.

On July 24, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell imposed a two-game suspension on Rice at the start of the regular season. Rice missed the Ravens Sunday opening loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and will miss Thursday night's game in Baltimore against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On Aug. 28, the NFL introduced new, standardized penalties for domestic violence: a six-game suspension for a first offense and an indefinite suspension of at least one year for a second offense. Goodell, who had been criticized on grounds that the suspension was too lenient, said at that time, "I didn't get it right. Simply put, we have to do better, and we will."

Current and ex-NFL players want Ray Rice banned from the NFL

Amid initial July 24 reports of the impending Rice suspension, Harbaugh addressed the matter at training camp. "It's really not a big deal. It's just part of the process. We said from the beginning the circumstances would determine the consequences. There are consequences when you make a mistake like that. I stand behind Ray [Rice] – he's a heck of a guy," Harbaugh said then. "He's done everything right since. He makes a mistake; he's going to have to pay a consequence."

Since the NFL imposed standardized penalties, two NFL player have been arrested on domestic violence charges.

On Aug. 31, wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, a practice squad player with the New York Jets, was arrested in Florham Park, N.J., on a charge of simple assault following an alleged domestic violence dispute with his girlfriend, according to the Florham Park Police Department.

Also that day, defensive tackle Ray McDonald of the San Francisco 49ers was arrested on domestic violence charges following an alleged incident at his 30th birthday party.

Goodell said recently that for the league to impose discipline a person would have to be "not only charged, but we would wait for the legal system to complete its process, particularly in any case on a first (offender). That's something that's very important to us."

I certainly don't think the NFL would have allowed him to keep playing if they had seen the video, but it does seem odd they didn't try harder to get the footage.

So Ray's been playing in the NFL since 2008...odds of him playing another down in the NFL appear to be low, by the time he's not tainted, he might be too old.

It shouldn't have taking the second video for this to happen.:rant2:

The fact that it did says a lot about the NFL .. I keep hearing claims that they actually did know about it before.

I love my Eagles but damn do I loathe the NFL.

On top of everything else sick with this video, though, one thing really bugs me. He clocks her, then doesn't even check her vitals. Or if she's OK. He just coldly waits then drags her out.

To me he is lower than a snake. Any man that would hit a woman like that should be put away for life. I haven't watch the video, not going to watch it.

I have a hard time believing the NFL knew about this prior to their decision. And I'm no stranger to a good conspiracy theory :)

I don't know why everyone's getting up in arms about it now, she married him after this incident.

If she is an abused woman (not saying she is, but IF), they often feel trapped, brainwashed, threatened, and/or intimidated into staying. Could be one explanation. Plenty of women (and men) are abused, but marry their abuser / stay for the long run. In fact, the majority stay. Fear is a powerful tool.

Or maybe she thinks getting smacked around a bit is OK as long as she has a rich husband .. Maybe she wants that life of luxury, or maybe she wants that financial stability for her child .. Who knows. We can all say, HA I wouldn't marry his scumbag ass, but you just never know what people are thinking ..

Either way I feel so so so bad for their little girl. Growing up with parents like that? :smh:

NFL never contacted casino to view Ray Rice tape: TMZ report

In its investigations of the Ray Rice domestic-assault case from earlier this year, the NFL never asked the casino in which the assault took place for a copy of security tapes, according to a new report by TMZ. Had the NFL done so, the casino would have handed over the tapes, per the report. Instead, the tapes were leaked over a period of several months, culminating in Monday's unsettling footage that resulted in Rice's release from the Ravens.

Related Stories
The NFL has maintained that it had not viewed the most significant moments of the assault, the time when Rice strikes his then-fiancee Janay Palmer and renders her unconscious, until Monday. (This, despite earlier indications to multiple media outlets that the NFL indeed had seen the footage.)

Why hadn't the NFL seen the footage? They asked law enforcement but did not receive it, according to a statement released Monday: "Security for Atlantic City casinos is handled by the New Jersey State Police. Any videos related to an ongoing criminal investigation are held in the custody of the state police. As we said earlier today: We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator. That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until [Monday]."

However, TMZ's sources indicated that the casino had made copies of the tape for both law enforcement and Rice's attorneys, but the NFL never asked either of those two entities for copies of the tape. There are, presumably, three possible rationales here:

1. The NFL is lying about not having seen the incriminating tape.

2. The NFL had not seen the incriminating tape because its investigators did not think, or know, to ask sources other than the police for a copy.

3. The NFL knew it could have checked with other sources, but chose not to do so in order to preserve plausible deniability and avoid bringing a harsher penalty down on Rice initially.

As a result of Monday's revelations, Rice was swiftly cut from the Ravens and suspended by the NFL. While his particular situation has been resolved for the moment, the question of what commissioner Roger Goodell knew and when he knew it remains a critical one.

How do you punish a guy twice for the same crime? There was literally NOTHING surprising about the video, it was exactly how it had been described before. So whats the difference? The public saw it, that is the only reason they did this. Im not defending Rice but this is stupid.

Agreed, the whole thing is dumb. He should have been punished (and more severely from the start [by the League and the police/prosecutor]), but the way this has been handled and the reactions from folks seem odd. How did they think she got KO'd? Why did the video of it matter?

i've tried to stay away from this as it just infuriates me to no end and what i think should happen to him probably shouldn't be said......ever.

but as i was driving home tuesday night (got off work around midnight) and listening to Jox (can't remember the name of the guy who's show is on at that time) a guy called in and gave his opinion of the situation.

the guy started of by saying he is a dog-lover. i thought, "weird, but whatever." he then went on to say that he is a Jets fan. that's when it hit me, he's gonna start talking about michael vick and compare it to the ray rice.....situation.
he said that when the Jets got vick, he was sick to his stomach and wondered how could his beloved Jets pick up someone who had done something so terrible. he stated again how he is a dog-lover. and then he said that he forgave michael vick since he realized that he could be just the type of quarterback the Jets needed.

that right there tells me this idiot put a game of football above his morals.

he then said that in time we'll all forgive ray rice and what he did.

immediately after that statement i turned off the radio. i just couldn't listen anymore.

how the hell does someone think that ALL OF US will forgive that piece of.......inhumanity?!

i don't care who it is.

my best friend
any of my coworkers
ANY of the ALABAMA players
ANY of the ALABAMA coaches.....including Coach Saban
ANY former ALABAMA player (no matter who)

if any of them did what this (insert expletive here) did, they would be considered non-existent to me.
