🏀 Bracketology 2020-21 season.- Selection Sunday (Bama to face Iona)

Did you have the same thoughts about UMBC and Virginia?

Not sure what you're asking. But I do know myself as well as millions of others had Virginia winning it all in one of their brackets that year. If you're simply talking of the loss by Virginia, no one held those two schools on the same level and it was considered a major upset. Those happen in March Madness.

It happens in February, and January.

A lot seem to encapsulate basketball in the same terms as they do the playoffs in football. The problem lies in the fact the parity is vastly greater.

While you're saying "no good wins" (sic) I'm seeing the aforementioned record versus Q1 opponents. There's a reason a football team is in the top ten, just like there's a reason a team is in Q1: quality basketball team. (UMBC, Q1 quality.)

I have no doubt, zero, that if we were looking at UK, UT, AU, or UF in the light of a 10-0 record in SEC play—after playing Bama's schedule and after the margin of wins—a huge number of folks would by saying, "that's a good ball club. That's got the makings of a #1 seed / final four contender."

But no. Not when it's Bama? 🤷‍♂️

I hear what you're saying, and to a point you're correct, but when you see how up and down we are with our offense, I don't see a #1 seed. We have not played to the level of Gonzaga, Baylor, Michigan, and Villanova or Houston. Sure, they just loss so people want to drop them, but they have few losses and have shown fewer letdowns.

Teams are forcing us to shoot lower percentage from three, and if we play like we did against Oklahoma we can't hang with better teams. I just want more consistency before I consider us a Top 4 team.

There's the key thing both Brandon and I have been referring to in this thread. "Before I consider us a top four team" versus " those that cover the sport professionally calling Bama a final four contender."

I don't believe you're taking into account the entire picture. Yes, offensive production has fallen the last few games for a few reasons. Yet, Bama is still rated #33 in offensive efficiency: Iowa is #1. On the same line, Iowa is rated 130th in defensive efficiency while the Tide is at #2. There are 120+ spots difference in luck when looking at Bama vs Michigan. 301 spots different than the aforementioned Houston in pace of play. Bama is at #9, Michigan at 217.

Brackets should be updated soon. Going in Bama was listed, at their lowest, a #3 seed in less than 10 of the 93 brackets currently out. The rest had the Tide as a #2 or #1 seed.

They very well may not deserve a #1 seed come March. They are certainly capable.

We are not talking about whether Bama is playing in the first or second round of the SECT. That in itself demonstrates a HUGE improvement in this team over a season and a half under Oats. Unfortunately, a lot of Bama fans simply don't understand how this work or they are still in the "Shula" phase of basketball fandom.

And we should get him back in about two weeks.
I think Bruner is indeed being missed for his experience and leadership. Even when he gets back it will take him some time to get back in playing shape. I assume he is already working towards that but still will require some game experience to get those legs back under him.

We need Primo/Quinerly/Petty to get back to hitting their shots. Quinerly has not really been the same since coming back from his 3 game hiatus.

I have a theory/hope that the last 5 minutes of the Mizzou game is going to be a catalyst for getting the offense and effort back in order. Oats has some game tape to show them the difference in the teams production when they play with energy and great effort.

In spite of the loss, based on these metrics, Alabama would be a solid #2 seed of the tournament started today.

They remain #7 on KenPom: #2 in defensive efficiency and with yesterday's action they're rated #32 in offensive efficiency.

Of the 93 current brackets, Bama is ranked as the #6 seed in the tournament. They average being ranked 2.06. A solid two seed.

NET rankings this morning have the Tide at #8 (a recent move up from #9.) The men continue to carry the best record against Q1 and Q2 schools: 10-4. (The Illini have 10 wins as well: 10-5 so far.) That's on the brink of falling to a #3 seed.

Tomorrow night's game at South Carolina will be against a Q2 opponent.

I haven't looked. @#80 @Brandon Van de Graaff Have you seen how they are running the bracket for the SECT? If we go by the standings pasted above AU is in the 12th position: but ineligible for post season play. Does UofSC (#12) get a bye for the normal two game Wednesday?

I actually got curious and looked over the weekend and found it. I'll see if I can find it again. I think there was an error on it though or either I got confused following it.

The in-season Top 16 will be revealed at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 13, on CBS. During the show, the DI Men's Basketball Committee will unveil what it considers to be the top 16 teams so far this season. A second half hour will air on CBSSN at 1 p.m.

The state of Kentucky, as a whole.

Below you'll see where Western Kentucky (L) and Kentucky (2 W's) are in the NET rankings. As Bama fans, we need to share the love a little with both teams as they are right on the cusp of falling into the 75 numbers. That would give Bama one more Q2 loss, but it takes away the Q3 loss to WKU early in the season. Kentucky moving up to 75 or lower takes two wins from Q3, puts them in Q2, and would bump the record (both teams included) from 7-1, Q2, to 9-2. (Bama would have one Q3 game, a win.)

While the NET in ONLY a daily snap shot of where teams stand that's a contending resume for a top seed.
