I know there are a few Bobby Johnson fans around here. This is a real interesting opportunity for Johnson, who has received quite a bit of critical acclaim despite he has yet to take Vandy to a bowl since his arrival in 2002.

If you're Johnson and the numbers are there at Duke, do you take the job?

Do you consider a move from Vandy (SEC) to Duke (ACC) an upgrade, a step down or a lateral move?

I'm not comparing campuses or athletic departments here--only cities, but personally if I had a family, I would not trade Nashville for Durham unless I was going to live outside the actual city of Durham.

Johnson's done a very good job at Vandy, but I think a .500 to .700 team is about the best they can do against SEC competition. I think the upside is better at Duke, simply because the competition is weaker. If the money was better, I'd take it. If he turns around a team that's gone 4-42 over the last four years, he could easily use that success as a stepping stone. He already knows how to recruit while adhering to stringent enrollment requirements.

Also, Duke may be a team poised to improve. I counted just 14 seniors on their roster. Defensively, their top defenders are underclassmen. In terms of total tackles, only the players ranking 3, 10 and 20 are seniors. The leading tackler (Vincent Rey, 111) is a sophomore, along with numbers four, seven and eight in the top ten in total tacklers. Offensively, the leading rusher's a junior and the QB's a sophomore. The leading receiver is a junior, too.

I consider the move to Duke a lateral NOW, but it holds much greater potential, career wise.

Good points, Tim.

As you can also see from their game scores, Duke's defense was fairly soft, too. Had it been better, The Blue Devils possibly could have had another two to three wins.

Connecticut Lost 14-45
@Virginia Lost 13-24
@Northwestern Won 20-14
@Navy Lost 43-46
@Miami (Fla.) Lost 14-24
Wake Forest Lost 36-41
Virginia Tech Lost 14-43
@Florida St. Lost 6-25
Clemson Lost 10-47
Georgia Tech Lost 24-41
@Notre Dame Lost 7-28
@North Carolina Lost 14-20

I would consider it a lateral move for Johnson, but he has a better chance at winning there. If the money is right and he see's some talent(even a little) then he should take it. Winning in the ACC would be a lot easier after all, and keeping the same non-conference schedule would be vital.

I think that it is a step down, because being the whipping boy of the SEC is a little different than being the whipping boy of the ACC. Though his expectations probably won't be as high. Not that they are that high at Vandy anyway. Though Vandy has become more competitive so they are not horribly the whipping boy anymore. Definitely a step down though.
