🏈 BJ Scott Transfers

TUSCALOOSA -- B.J Scott will follow through with a transfer to South Alabama when he enrolls in classes Tuesday, a source with direct knowledge of the process has confirmed.

The former Vigor star and redshirt junior-to-be appeared in 15 games for Alabama and finished with six tackles and one interception as a defensive back.

Scott will be eligible to play for the Jaguars next season and is expected to help fill a need in the defensive secondary.

At Alabama, Scott might be best remembered for helping to assemble the 2008 signing class after making an early commitment to the Crimson Tide. Those signees played a huge role in the Crimson Tide's 13th national championship, an SEC championship and the program's first Heisman Trophy winner in Mark Ingram.

Alabama coach Nick Saban remarked on the '08 class when Ingram, Marcell Dareus and Julio Jones all announced they would skip their senior season to enter the NFL draft. Mark Barron and Dont'a Hightower also considered jumps, but have decided to return next season.

"It was a great class," Saban said. "These guys are a large part of it. ...Based on the production and performance, there was a lot of opportunity for all these guys early in their careers. These guys took advantage of it, made a significant impact on the program immediately and, based on accomplishment, this class probably had as much to do with what's been accomplished the last three years as any class. I would say that, based on their performance and the results, it has to be as good as any."

Scott underwent season-ending ankle surgery in November before exploring his options. During the Tide's bowl preparations for the Capital One Bowl, he rode a stationary bike alongside other injured players. He traveled to Orlando, Fla., with the team, but his personal profile was missing from Alabama's media bowl guide.

Scott was rated by Rivals.com to be a five-star prospect out of Vigor, and he was rated the No. 1 athlete and No. 19 prospect in the ESPN.com 150 rankings.

I wish him well. We just never found quite the right spot for him.

I'm more of the "he didn't fit in our system as expected" kind of guy.

In Joey's offense, if that's where he ends up, he'll shine and I'd bet we'll hear "what could have been with..."

I meant to look it up yesterday and forgot...what's his record down there now?

Terry, I think we are saying the same thing in a slightly different way.

Joey Jones is 17-0 at South Alabama. He is one former Bama player I'd want considered when CNS chooses to step down. He definitely did it the right way when he was in this area at Mountain Brook. Even though the "Brookies" live in one of the wealthiest areas of the state, they were always one of the physically toughest teams I saw in this area. Vlachos is one of his products.

I've been watching him pretty closely the last decade or so. It's simply amazing what he's down at USA.

I hate that BJ never could really find his spot here at UA. I wish him well there at USA.

Joey has done an outstanding job no matter where he has been. When I was coaching, our HC called and spoke with Joey about coming and watching a practice one day. We never got around to it during the Spring, but after we had lost out in the playoffs, our HC called and Joey said to come on. He was preparing for the semi finals while there at Mtn. Brook. We came up and Joey was very hospitible and gave us a free roam of the practice. Joey is a class act! If he was to get hired here after CNS, no doubt in my mind that he would be a winner!!

Can I first say that as a USA alumni I will change my avatar once there is a USA logo.

Can I also be the first to say that USA is the greatest football program in NCAA history, based on all time winning percentage (minimum 16 games played.)

Can I also say that Joey Jones has done a great job at South and everywhere else he's been. Especially with the Stallions.

I'd say "no, you can't say that." But...

Jones grabbed a kid from the 'Dawgs like he did with BJ. Kid's name is Baker...RB that RS'd this year I believe.

When is it they are going D1...you know?

Pretty sure it's this season. Sun Belt Conference, maybe?

EDIT: Oops, was I wrong, or what? It's "by 2013" that they will transfer to the Sun Belt conference.
We'll see how it goes, then.

Joey Jones has done an outstanding job at USA.
[How many teams that started in their division finished 17-0 before going to 1-A? I bet it's a very low number.
Let's just see if they can repeat their success in FBS.]

And sad to see B.J. Scott go, but I wish him luck at USA. :)

The Sun Belt is a big boy conference? There's a BIG BIG Gap between the football played at USA's current level, and what is played at the next level. Another big gap exists between what is played in the SUN BELT and what is played in the SEC. Not to downplay the lovefest for Joey Jones here, but he's won a few games in the minors. AA Minor leagues. It's a long distance to the major leagues.

Sorry to rain on the parade.

As for BJ Scott, hate to see him go. I still see him as one of those guys that COULD contribute to this team. Talented, no doubt. Reminds me of the career of Roy Upchurch, who had injuries and other players to play behind, yet made a HUGE contribution to this program in 2009. The guys that leave to go someplace else, I believe we will learn to miss.

Buddy of mine worked for the athletic department for a while. IF Conference USA loses UCF to the Big East then USA is on the short list of schools to replace them. I believe it they will be completely legit in 2013 somewhere.

If USA goes D1 in 2013, when is the last time a kid can transfer without penalty? Fall 2012? Spring 2013? Up until they play a game? If someone could transfer just under the wire, not lose any eligibility and still play D1 that would make for a nice incentive for the disgruntled.

RTR,

Tim

That's a damn good question Tim.
