🏈 Big days for Alabama quarterbacks

Greg McElroy and A.J. McCarron each had big days throwing the ball last Friday in Alabama's first full scrimmage of the spring.

Both quarterbacks also spent time working with the first unit. McElroy is clearly the starter and deserves to be, but don't be surprised if McCarron also gets some time with the first team in games next season.

It's also been an impressive start to the spring for true freshman quarterback Phillip Sims, although Sims didn't play much in Friday's scrimmage.

"The quarterback position here is in good hands long after I'm gone. That's for sure," said McElroy, who was 14-of-22 for 235 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown pass to Marquis Maze.

McCarron finished 21-of-28 for 229 yards and three touchdowns.

"There were times when both first units really looked good, in terms of what they did and how they moved the ball," Alabama coach Nick Saban said.

Julio Jones, proving that he's as healthy as he's been in a long time, led all receivers with eight catches for 105 yards. Redshirt freshman receivers Kenny Bell and Kevin Norwood also had good scrimmages.

Defensively, defensive end Marcell Dareus had four sacks. He may end up being the best defensive lineman in the league next season.

Also, junior linebacker Dont'a Hightower went full speed in the scrimmage on his surgically repaired knee, showing that he's all the way back. Hightower had a sack.

Sophomore linebacker Nico Johnson sprained the MCL in his left knee in the scrimmage and will miss practice time this spring.

"I was pleased with the way the first defense played," Saban said. "We don't have the same kind of depth, and we've got to get more players playing consistently on the defensive field after that first group."
