The Wizard, Mr. Smith, was the best defensive SS to play the game IMO. He did not start to hit for any average until later in his career. Ripken was just a stud during his tenure with Baltimore. Gary Templeton, the former Cardinal and Padre was an excellent MLb player but his attitude was horrible. He made the famos quote concerning the all-star game, "if I ain't starting, I ain't departing."
