Bama opens SEC play this weekend and they will be tested right out of the box. The Aggies played to their lofty preseason expectations yet, but they've still been pretty good. And if, more likely when, they hit that extra gear, they are going to be right back in the conversation as one of the best 3 or 4 teams in all of college baseball. Personally, I'd be ok if they fluttered through the Bama series and found their stride in another series. But, I also love the test this weekend provides the Bama team all-around. A hostile environment, a loaded lineup for the pitchers to navigate, and on their side, a top end staff to deal with when Bama is at the plate. Should be a really good, fun series.

The Crimson Tide connected on four home runs, including two in the final inning, to pick up its first SEC win

COLLEGE STATION, Texas. –
In a 4-4 game in the final inning, Brennen Norton and Kade Snell broke the deadlock, as the pair lifted consecutive two-out solo home runs to guide No. 17 Alabama baseball to a 6-4 win over No. 19 Texas A&M on Friday at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park. The Crimson Tide improved to 18-1 overall and 1-0 in Southeastern Conference play with the victory.

Norton and Snell both finished the evening 1-for-4, as their solo homers in the ninth resulted in their lone hits. Will Hodo was 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch, producing a two-run home run in the second to open the scoring. Bryce Fowler closed 1-for-4, also slugging a two-run home run. Richie Bonomolo Jr. and Coleman Mizell managed 1-for-4 efforts with both men contributing doubles. Eight of the nine men in the Tide lineup managed one hit apiece.

Zane Adams was tasked with his fifth start of the spring and the native Texan delivered a quality outing in his home state. Adams was responsible for just one earned run on seven hits over his 5.2 innings while walking just one to go with four strikeouts. Matthew Heiberger surrendered a pair of hits and notched two strikeouts to encompass his 0.2 innings.

Carson Ozmer (1-0) earned the win after entering the game with a one-run lead in the seventh. After allowing a game-tying home run in the eighth, Ozmer saw the first two men in the ninth reach base. Even so, the graduate induced a 1-3 double play before picking up the final out of the ballgame to earn his first victory of the spring.

From Head Coach Rob Vaughn

"Great start to SEC play tonight. I challenged the guys before the game to win the toughness battle and they were great tonight. What a great start for Zane Adams in his home state and just gritty at-bats all night long. The environment was electric tonight and the boys responded like I knew they would. I'm proud of the effort and on to the next one."

Quick game recap while the basketball game is at the half...

Adams got the start and went 5 2/3... pitched very well and gave up 2 run (1 earned though the error call on Bromolo Jr was bogus, so it should have been 2 ER, IMO). Heiberger relieved him and worked 2/3. The closer, Ozmer came into the game in the 7th with runners on the corners and Bama up 4-3 and got out of the jam. He surrendered a solo HR (along with the lead) in the 8th. Going into the 9th, tied at 4, the first 2 Bama hitters failed to reach. With 2 down, and already two 9th inning pitching changes by A&M, Norton stepped to the plate a crushed a solo HR. Snell immediately followed with one of his own. 6-4 Bama going to the bottom half... they kept Ozmer in the game (ballsy) and he got into some trouble but wiggled out of it with thanks to a nifty DP on a comeback liner, then ended things on a routine grounder.

In all, 4 Bama his 4 HR's on the night... Fowler, Hodo, Norton, and Snell.

Really nice win though. Bama won't have Ozmer again this weekend, but still plenty of good arms available out of the pen for the next 2. Say it all the time, but getting this first series, on the road at that, against this Aggies team would be really, really big.
