The severe weather forecast for Saturday means a doubleheader today for Bama and MSU. I haven't seen much from MSU this season, but they definitely aren't the pushover MSU teams of the past. The Bulldogs are coming off a weekend sweep against a pretty good auburn team last weekend. No predictions from me, but this is a series Bama really needs to win right out of the SEC gate (and at home).

It wasn't easy, though not much will be in SEC play for this team in '25, but Bama held on for the win in game 2. Nice bounceback from game 1, but still way too many walks, Ellestad made 3 errors, etc. Lot ot clean up and it nearly cost them. All 4 of MSU's runs were unearned. At the plate, Bama showed what their bats are capable of this season... a little more pop than last year and more consistency overall (much better approaches as opposed to last year too). The winner on Sunday takes the series... hopefully, Bama comes out ready and takes it.

Good bounce back in game 2 for the ladies. However, IMO, they are going to have a really hard time competing with teams like A&M, Florida, and Oklahoma. This program has been in decline for several years. Not to mention later on in the season they have back to back series with Oklahoma and Florida.

Maybe this will be the year others see it. Not gonna lie, pretty amazing how Alabama has found their way to the College World Series, but it always seemed more like luck lately than true development and talent.

The Crimson Tide bounced back from a game one loss with a 7-4 win in game two

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.
– Alabama softball opened conference play Friday at Rhoads Stadium with a doubleheader vs. Mississippi State, falling in the opener, 9-1, before bouncing back with a 7-4 win in game two to set up a deciding game three on Sunday.

Alabama (21-8, 1-1 SEC) trailed Mississippi State (23-5, 4-1 SEC) early in game one as the Bulldogs jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead in the second. The Crimson Tide stranded two on base in the bottom of the second and left the bases loaded in the third, unable to break into the run column. Mississippi State added to its lead with a pair of solo home runs in the top of the fifth before Alabama plated a run in the bottom half off a fielding error, as it was now a 5-1 game heading to the sixth. The Bulldogs scored four more runs in the top of sixth, putting the game within run-rule territory. The Tide got two on base in the home half of the inning but couldn't scratch a run across as the game ended in six innings at 9-1.

In game two, Mississippi State scored first again with one in the top of the first, but Alabama responded with three in the bottom half, two of which came off a Brooke Ellestad triple, to pull ahead 3-1. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third, but a 6-4-3 double play got the Tide out of the jam with its two-run lead intact. With one on and two out in the top of the fourth, a fielding error extended the inning and Mississippi State took advantage, as a two-run double and RBI single plated three unearned runs and gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead. With two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, back-to-back walks swung the lead back in Alabama's favor, 5-4. Abby Duchscherer added some key insurance runs with a two-run home run in the sixth inning and Alea Johnson came in and pitched a third shutout relief inning in the top of the seventh to earn her second save of the year and secure the 7-4 win.

From Head Coach Patrick Murphy

"It was a tale of two games. We're still giving away too many freebies. Too many walks, too many errors - we have to stop that. The walks are a killer, but we don't quit. We had some big hits, Brooke [Ellestad] got a big hit, Abby [Duchscherer] got a big hit to get us some insurance runs. I think overall, our at-bats were better in game two."

This is a team with major flaws that keeps getting worse and worse each year. Way to many errors, leaving to many in scoring position, and probably the biggest, a weak, weak, pitching staff with the exception of Briski.

This is not a surprise that State wins the series. The Bama softball program has been in decline for years and doesn’t look very promising for the future. CPM has said this is the most talented team he’s had at Alabama. If that’s true…There’s definitely a coaching problem.

I'm not saying this is false, but I don't recall him saying such. I very well could have missed it though and would love to see an article/link to it. Just seems like an odd thing for him to say based on where the roster is at right now and some concerns I know they had going into the season.

Yes, it was a surprise to me especially when you look at the talent he’s had over the years. If not mistaken it was during the UCLA game earlier in the season when they talked to him during the game.

Talent doesn't always mean wins unfortunately. A lot of times we combine the two, talent and performance. I did it with the football team, and look at that. In this case, tge game has caught up and you simply cannot win with talent alone anymore. Too many good coaches out there squeezing more out of their players. Keep hearing Alabama is still a top destination, but the continuous errors can't help but make me question that.

In the meantime, OU is 26-0 (5-0) in the SEC and just swept a pretty good Arkansas team in Fayetteville. 😬 :)
