The Tigers have made the first move in their search for a new defensive coordinator.

Former Florida head coach Will Muschamp has been offered the job and is considering the opportunity, AuburnSports.com has learned. The one-time Auburn assistant coached the Gators during their loss at Florida State last weekend and held firm on plans to spend some time clearing his head before considering his next move.

I don't think he ends up in Auburn, but he will end up in the SEC.

As @252BAMA suggests, South Carolina allows him to slide into a HC position if the shoe fits in a few years. I thought Spurrier could be hanging it up this year, still won't surprise me if he does...but he recently said he's still got a few years left in the tank.

Texas A&M is the other.

Muschamp watch: Carolina, Auburn or Texas A&M?

COLUMBIA — If South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier had an opportunity to bring on ousted Florida Coach Will Muschamp and add him to South Carolina’s, we strongly believe he would do so.

What other moves on the current staff that would precipitate, we cannot be completely sure, nor can we be sure at all that this is a move that will happen. Muschamp is currently taking some time off and his situation will be resolved whenever he’s ready.

As of this writing, we are not aware of a change in any USC assistant statuses as far as anybody being notified of a change being made.

As to a potential salary for Muschamp and USC’s willingness to pay it, it’s highly likely that Muschamp ultimately becomes the highest-paid assistant coach in the country as he’s sure to command a lofty salary worth well over a million dollars per year. From what I’ve been told, I don’t think the South Carolina administration would hesitate one bit to reach up into that range if that’s what it took to make it happen.

I’m not saying that USC could outbid or will outbid any program if the salary demands got outrageous, but USC could probably offer what it took to make it happen unless things got out of hand. I don’t really believe that money will be a deciding factor for Muschamp either, as he’s getting around $6.5 million from Florida as part of his package there and he’s going to be making a nice living as a coordinator too.

The three programs linked to Muschamp in his ā€œfree agencyā€ are all in the SEC — those being Auburn (Ellis Johnson is reportedly out as defensive coordinator), South Carolina and Texas A&M.

Spurrier will have Ray Tanner and the administration’s support on making moves to better the program if Spurrier wants to do it. As it was put to me, it’s up to the HBC and Muschamp to make it happen. That means the ball is really in Muschamp’s court.
In many ways it’s an attractive situation from the outside in that Muschamp would have a chance to go to a good place and turn around a defense, build his resume and eventually get another shot at a head coaching gig among other things.

On the other hand, nobody is sure how long Steve Spurrier will be at South Carolina. That is a good point, but I also find it interesting that the head coaches from the other two programs listed here are not exactly the definition of stability per se. Each has been linked as a potential NFL candidate at some point and really there are no guarantees that a certain head coach will be at a particular program at any time.

Bottom line: I couldn’t rule anything out. Texas A&M seems the least likely to me, but at the same time, I couldn’t be surprised if it was the place either. There is a lot of stuff floating around out there. Auburn’s out there and I think South Carolina is still on the table as well.

Gus Malzahn has moved his first chip in the search for a defensive coordinator, according to AuburnSports.com.

Auburn has offered former Florida head coach Will Muschamp the job and Muschamp is said to be considering it, AuburnSports.com reports, citing sources.

Muschamp is staying committed to his plan to take time to consider his next move, because he has multiple offers on the table.

The respected defensive coach also has received a lucrative offer from Texas A&M, which dismissed Mark Snyder on Sunday. According to AuburnSports.com’s Jay G. Tate, Auburn has told Muschamp it will compete with any offer made by a collegiate program, however, at least two NFL organizations have contacted the ousted Florida coach.

Muschamp has not given any potential employers word of his long-term plan, though Malzahn reportedly is willing to give Muschamp time to make a decision.

According to Tate, while Malzahn doesn’t want to pressure Muschamp, the second-year Auburn coach will make a hire no later than next week. With former defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson out, Tigers defensive assistants are in an uncomfortable situation knowing their jobs may be in jeopardy.

Though Muschamp is regarded as the hot candidate, he will be expensive. Florida owes him more than $6 million during the remainder of his contract. AuburnSports.com reports Auburn is willing to spend at least $1.2 million on its next defensive coordinator, though it is unknown how high the Tigers would be willing to go.

Johnson is owed more than $2 million through 2017, while former head men’s basketball coach Tony Barbee is owed $2.4 million during the next three years. Current basketball coach Bruce Pearl will receive $15 million over the next six years.

Should Muschamp decline the offer, UAB head coach Bill Clark is reportedly garnering interest from Malzahn, this on the heels of the decision to shut down the UAB program.

Memphis defensive coordinator Barry Odom, who met with Auburn earlier this week, is also still in the running.

Why would he go back?
Why should we believe he's considering the job?

As soon as I saw Jay Tate by bullshit meter broke. Remember, this is the same guy that said Fisher was going to be the head coach at Auburn. The same guy that...

...geez, I'm not going to waste my time listing all the instances...

I can't see the Old Ball Coach hanging around here in SC much longer. He's old and he'll be starting from scratch next year with a QB that hasn't taken a snap, basically and defense that sucks. He says he has gas in the tank, but he's not staring at a very bright future. He doesn't exactly have the cupboards full of talent like what we have at Alabama.

I don't care what he does, but I'm not sure why he'd want to go coach with/for a guy who treats defense the way Gus does when he has so many other options (both college and NFL). Also, there is/was apparently some bad blood with Boom and Jay Jacobs from his previous stint there, but I'm not sure on all the details or even how much of an issue that is (that kind of thing is fairly common if it's minor). I'm not so sure that after all these coaching dominos fall, he doesn't slide right back into a HC position at a lower tier school.

That's my point exactly.

Not surprised. Bud Foster could be in play now as well, believe Texas A&M are making a run at him.

It's interesting you mention Foster. The same people on UofSC sites claiming Boom to the 'Cocks is a done deal are teh same that said Foster was a done deal before they ended up hiring Johnson.

That said, they also said Spurrier was getting the job when Holtz started talking retirement...so, in my eyes, it's a flip of the coin right now.

I have thought all along that he would end up at USCe. The relationship he and Spurrier have developed is supposedly pretty tight. At this point with a 6 million dollar buy out from UF, I don't think money is as big of an issue as opportunity is. Looking at it from my couch perspective, I would say USCe is the best option. Money will be plenty, but the east is an easier division and he will have a good defense no matter where he coaches. Plus the whole coach in waiting thing. Spurrier can't have many more years left and Muschamp would be a shoe in 3 or 4 years down the road. If this were about the money (which I don't think it is) aTm is the most logical choice. We know that the state of Texas has no problem out bidding anyone if it is something they really want.
