🏈 BAMA vs UCLA in 2012?

The recent flurry of activity regarding conference expansion has slowed the chatter surrounding Alabama's pursuit to find a high-profile opponent for its 2012 non-conference football schedule.
Possible opponents have popped up, like Texas Tech, Miami (which is now playing Notre Dame that year) and Notre Dame (which is now playing Miami).
Well, here is one more: UCLA.
A blog today by Chris Foster of the Los Angeles Times says an opportunity has developed for UCLA to play Alabama at a neutral site (like Dallas, perhaps) to open the 2012 season. The possibility comes up because Nebraska, after just joining the Big Ten, could ask out of a planned 2012 game with UCLA. If that happens, "the Bruins and Crimson Tide probably will have a date," Foster writes.
Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban has said he wants one high-profile non-conference opponent each season. Penn State visits Alabama in 2010 with the Tide returning the trip in 2011.
Saban said recently that ESPN presented Alabama with five possible opponents to play in Atlanta or Dallas to open the 2012 season.
"There's a lot of good teams," Saban said, "and all the teams that we have a chance to play are good teams. We'll see what works out. It's a lot of scheduling issues on the other end, too. They have to agree to play you."
UCLA and Alabama have played three times, including a home-and-home series in 2000 where both meetings were won by the Bruins. Most memorable for Alabama was a 35-24 upset defeat in Pasadena to open the 2000 season. The Tide was ranked No. 3 at the time but went on a 3-8 record.
Alabama won the schools' first meeting -- 36-6 -- in the 1976 Liberty Bowl.

This is a stupid story. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for Nebraska to ask out of this game. In fact, because of the close relationship of the two conferences, it is more attractive now than when it was scheduled. An OOC game is an OOC game is an OOC game no matter what conference Nebraska is in. The game is scheduled for 9/8/12. The little eleven/twelve does not schedule conference games in the first 4 weeks of the season. Nebraska will play at UCLA on 9/8/12 as scheduled, just as Illinois will play at Arizona State and Wisconsin will play at Oregon State on that date. UCLA will play at Nebraska on 9/14/13 as scheduled. End of stupid story!

I'd like to see Bama play an NFL team. Let's welcome the Oakland Raiders and Rolando McClain back to Tuscaloosa.

Realistically, if we don't get something done on this pretty soon, that 2012 OOC schedule is going to be weak. Only two years away, to not have a high profile team lined up is looking slim. I'd like to see Texas A&M.

Not to worry. Bama has several options still available. However, Texas A&M would not be one of them because of their neutral site series with Arkansas in Dallas. They would be a prospect for a future Home and Away series.

My guess is the delay is because they would prefer Dallas over Atlanta but the opponent options there are not to their liking. Look for them to go with the match up against Miami in the second game in Atlanta.
