šŸˆ Bama vs ranked opponents

Ole Miss didn't use the HUNH last season. Freeze specifically pointed to it throughout the season to limit mistakes his offense was making. While Auburn does fun a version of a hurry up pace, that's a power running team no matter how you choose to define them. The same with OSU, who used a little hurry up. OU, a little hurry up.

Back to the point, the stats are still arbitrary now that you've redefined them. If you're going to use the Auburn loss in 2013 you have to include the two wins against A&M and Mississippi.

It seems like people have forgotten Bama played a HUNH offense in week two ... of this year.
Even if I include A&M and OM in 2013, that would be 8-5. I thought we didn't accept that kind of record at Bama.

I'll make a deal with you. If Alabama has defensive success the rest of this season against teams that use HUNH, I'll never post on here again.
I am talking about teams that decide to use the HUNH against Bama, even if they don't traditionally use it (Georgia, Tenn, etc). Real teams too, not MTSU.

It's fine. We will agree to disagree. I just know that they use the exact same defensive system that they have used for the past 7 years. Having talked to two friends of mine that are former Bama players in the NFL, they will tell you that the system is not different. They are both former defensive starters.

I'd like for someone to tell me what specific changes the defense has made from last year other than getting players to lose weight. They still use a 3-4 base defense shifting to a 4-3 by moving up a linebacker. The still have their cornerbacks set up in the same shade as before with the same cushion. To apply pressure on the quarterback, they rely on the same basic blitz packes that they have used forever-a corner blitz with the inside corner on the short side, the corner following the motion receiver to the inside and an inside twist with a linebacker and defensive tackle. It hasn't changed.

And therein lies a lot of the problem. Everybody knows Kirby's schemes and tendencies now and can manipulate him to do what they want when they want. They know exactly where the right hot read is when he brings pressure because it's all the same blitz packages. I love Kirby the coach and the person but I think it might be time for him to take that head coaching job somewhere so he can grow and we can shake things up.

No, this defense isn't giving up drives, it's giving up explosive play way too often. The damage is being done on one big play.

...Fact is, we have lost 5 games out of 11 to ranked opponents by an average of nearly 30 points. That's pretty awful. ...

When has Alabama lost by 30 points? Did I miss something? I believe you mean the average given up was 30 points.

After the beating by Florida & Utah in 2008 Alabama has lost by margins of 14 (USC), 3 (LSU), 1 (AU), 3(LSU), 5 (TAMU), 6 (AU), 14 (OU), 6 (OM), 7 (OSU), and now 6 (OM).

I'll take our defense any day over anyone. Sometimes game plans work and sometimes they don't. I'm not throwing in the towel yet.

Yes, that is what I meant.

I still think our defense is top notch. I agree that our D has been "figured out" by others. Sometimes it looked like Ole Piss knew exactly what was coming. It will be interesting to see what adjustments and improvements (hopefully) are made before Jawja.

He was talking about points allowed.

You're right about it being figured out. I have heard several coaches and players saying after games that Alabama's defense didn't do anything we haven't seen for years. Specifically, Hugh Freeze said it after LAST YEAR'S game. Teams know what we are doing and the only times we really do well on defense is when the talent gap is overly large.

What is exactly is y'alls reference point at when K Smarts Defense was so dominate & it isn't any more? Clearly, you believe that giving up all these points in wins & losses indicates that "Everybody knows Kirby's schemes and tendencies now and can manipulate him to do what they want when they want." Which is utterly ridiculous. So when was the time everybody didn't? Perhaps your referring to 2011 defense or maybe even 2012 being so dominant. But as of 2013 folks have got it all figured out now. I'm sorry y'all but that just is not the case...facts do not support your theory. Most of those teams that beat us, either played in the NC or won it...that isn't garbage teams. You just cannot win them all but at least we were in most of those loses.

There is just one thing that has not been mentioned in any respect that has HUGE implications to a Monstrous defense.... Veteran Leadership. 2011 Team had several players stay for their senior year. Notably Hightower, Barron, & J Williams. Even Chapman & Moseley were Senior 3 year starters. IF there was one thing CNS could do to make the biggest impact to this teams dominance is figure out to keep guys longer. Now that we've seen so many leave early that are not fairing as well, compared to those who stayed; He might be able to make a stronger case for them staying.
