I dunno... I know that I am the uber-homer, but I just don't see a reason to be overly concerned about Michigan.
Their OL is serviceable - but not great. Our DL is going to be very good. They will be youthful at the 2's, but the starters have a ton of reps. Ditto for the 'backers. Our secondary replaced a lot of NFL talent, but there is NFL talent in our secondary this season. Robinson does not have a history as a pinpoint passer by any stretch of the imagination.
In 2011, Michigan State and Iowa held them to 14 and 16 points, respectively. They broke 40 against Nebraska, which was probably their best game - but Nebraska wasn't so good against South Carolina, was blown out by Wisky, and lost to 6-7 Northwestern.
Denard was Michigan's leading rusher. #2 rusher Fitz Toussaint is back... but the running game doesn't really scare me. Alabama ranked #2 in the NCAA in run defense in 2008 and 2009, 10th in 2010, and 1st in 2011. The defense in 2012 is expected to drop off a little from last year's record setting unit, but it is expected to be much better than 2010.
Yes, our secondary is breaking in some new faces, but most are experienced... Perry, Belue, Clinton-Dix, Fulton, Lester, Milliner, Sunseri, Williams...there are others...these guys have playing and starting time.
The DL lost some faces, but Jesse Williams is an absolute beast at NT, Square, Dial, Stinson... these guys are all experienced and good enough to disrupt things and force the play.
LB lost some faces, but Hubbard, DePriest, Nico, Mosely - all played enough minutes to be household names. Tana Patrick is due for a breakout season.
Will we step back defensively? Probably...it would be hard not to. The 2011 unit may have been our best ever defense. They were unbelievable. 2012 will be very, very good, and there is enough experience and depth that I don't see a long-term slump while reserves learn "on the job." The 2's could be a concern if fatigue gets to our 1's, but the 4th quarter program + a ton of 3 & outs will allay that.
I just don't see Michigan's offense doing much against us. We will be significantly better defensively than the Va Tech squad that held the Wolverines under 200 yards in the Sugar Bowl. Many feel that Michigan will be down a bit because of the OL issues - but even if they are the same or slightly better, we are still at an extreme advantage.
The real tale of the tape is when Michigan's defense is on the field.
Mismatch. Period.
They have good linebackers, but our offense plays against great 'backers in practice every day. Our OL against their DL is an extreme mismatch. It is well documented that Michigan lost 3 starters from the DL, but I think the mismatch with Alabama is underhyped. Seriously. Alabama has 3 All-Americans on the OL, and by the end of the season that number may reach 4.
Everyone talks about Denard, but Alabama is the team with the 2012 BCS NC game NVP at QB. The receiving corp is very good, if not filled with household names... and Lacey + Fowler + Yeldon + anyone any crimson who runs the ball will get all the yards they want against the Michigan D. VT had almost 400 yards against Michigan - before the DL graduated. Alabama is NOT VT. I don't know that VT has a single player on the offensive 2 deep that would crack the 2 deep on Alabama's offensive roster.
The way I see it, Alabama plays to its standard then Alabama wins this game comfortably. If Michigan goes panic mode and gets sloppy, it will get ugly.
