When Crane was named HC at McGill-Toolen in the early 90's, he called my Dad and asked if he'd return to coaching and join his staff. We picked up and moved from B'ham to the Mobile area that summer. Spent a lot of time around him, his house was a shrine to UA and NY Jets with photos and memorabilia. He was a good man who did a lot of good things for Mobile area youth.

I met him as a youngster when he spoke at our high school athletic banquet in the mid 60’s. Very nice man.

One thing he said that has stuck with me over 50 years was something Coach Bryant told the team:
“Don’t do anything that you’d be ashamed to tell your momma. “

Advice I didn’t always follow.
