Johnson is set to receive a single lump payment of $5.5 million within 10 calendar days of the execution of the agreement, which was signed by both parties Saturday.

8 million stretched over a few years—mitigated by future employment pay—or 5.5 million in one lump sum. In the end, if Avery gets another job he'll likely end up on the plus side of the equation. I'd have to read over Avery'd contract again to be 100% sure, but I'm fairly certain that's how it broke down.

He'll definitely end up on the plus side. $5.5 million PLUS whatever his next job pays. No offset for new pay. Alabama saves $2.5 million.

I wonder if they convinced Avery that they would wait him out when the buyout hit 6 mil? 5.5 million isn't much of a tradeoff at that point to settle on a lump sum.

The $6 million figure would still be subject to an offset by any new coaching compensation. The compromise works well for both parties.

Considering the program as a whole, even if it's a bit of a loss for UA, I'd rather see them take the loss and move on versus hearing about Bama negotiating while Oats is building, ya know?

I think the negotiated buyout lets everybody move on. How many times have we seen situations where the press or fans continue to monitor how many more payments exist on a coach's or player's contract? This lets everyone focus on the future.
