🏈 Auburn wants to play UAB in a spring exhibition. UAB wants to play Auburn. This begs the question: Who's stopping this, and why?

It’s all fun and wonderful until somebody gets hurt. With an intersquad scrimmage, it looks real but it isn’t. The clock is adjusted and the HC can adjust the clock on the fly. Players play to make a statement on future playing time, but typically can’t take the QB down. No full speed kickoffs or punts. If you play another team, not as many players will get to play. You can still have an adjusted clock, but who’s in charge? Spring practice is for player development, not winning (except for the steak vs beans and wieners).

Nobody should be stopping a regular season game between the two big programs, Alabama and Auburn from playing the other in-state schools. I have no problem with a "glorified scrimmage" if they want to play a spring game. @OldPlayer makes solid points about the QB, kickoffs, sacks, player development, etc... Personally, I'd leave the exhibition game off the table.

If Auburn is playing UAB, they're practicing against guys who are their 3's, their 4's, in most cases.

What happen when one of the top players gets and ending injury? I know it can happen in practice, but this would be different. Also, The fight between teammates is one thing, but the fight between non-teammate is a lot different.

The idea has been talked about for years... I don't think? there is anything stopping it, but not sure. I don't have any issues with it personally... if 2 schools agree to do it, go for it. IMO, Alabama's A-Day would be more entertaining if Alabama played another team (even if it was someone like MTSU)... The issue is, the schools would have to be on the same (or very close) spring practice schedule to make it work, and the coaches would have to agree on the parameters of the game itself.

I could see a in state A game. But the out of state one would be a little hard to get up. Where would the game be played at? I know the NFL does this, but those teams practice all week together.

Too much at risk to be honest. Injuries in a game that doesn’t mean shit and like stated before,”getting other schools with similar schedule” , getting them to agree to travel to you, travel costs, agreeing on the parameters for said “game”.

I’ve been thinking about this. First, if you’re playing against yourself, you’re going to win either way. If you’re playing against another team, you need to win - especially if you’re a major power team and your opponent is a G5 or lower team. That means you can’t hide anything if it’s close. Spring games are usually pretty vanilla. But if Alabama or Auburn are close or behind, they’ll need to uncover plays and formations that need to stay in the playbook until the season. This is especially true for a team like Auburn that is installing a new offense and defense. If you lose the game, even if it doesn’t count, it will be discussed and dissected for a year.
