We were in a different era of football then and he did leave TX with an offense scoring, on average, 28 points per game. In 2010 Bama was averaging 36 a game when it was a league where defense was still winning ball games.

This past season Boise State only averaged 28 a game against Mountain West competition. In 2019 they were averaging 21.

I didn't know anything about him and did not realize he had been Co-Offensive Coordinator at the short horns with Applewhite. A lot of numbers in that loss column.

Outside of Peterson's one year with Washington making the playoffs (which we took care of that), I don't believe any Boise State coach has had much success when they stepped up in to the power 5 conference play. By success, I mean playoff/NC games. Peterson is 55-26 at Washington, Hawkins was 19-39 at Colorado... It's bad when Houston Nutt was the most successful coach after he left your program. .... Harsin will have his work cut out for him and if he's handcuffed by the PTB's down there, they better start saving for another buyout.... I need that gig, go down there, violate some recruiting rules and get me a NC type QB, win one NC or make the playoffs, get extension/buyout worth millions, shit the bed the next year or two, take my buyout and go be an analyist for the GOAT in TTown while yellafella writes me my checks.

Whether he can adapt offensively will be a question, along with his recruiting ability. I would say his HC experience separates him from Shula, though.

Resume, yes. How he manages the program and how he does (record) at AU? No. In the end I believe we'll see the same type results sans 2005. I also don't believe we'll see the "team discipline/actions" fall to the level it was during Chizik but I'm shaky there until knowing who is retained.

In the same way Alabama wasn't a good job during the DuBose through Shula era that's not a good job now. There's far too much division at AU just like there was in Tuscaloosa: different power brokers and their roles but the same never the less.

As a side note, I believe Greene is a pretty good guy. Oats has affirmed, if not shaped that thinking. That said, there's a reason he's been trying to get out of West Opelika for over a year.

AUBURN, Alabama – Over the course of the past nine days, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out who Auburn’s next head football coach would be. Boise State coach Bryan Harsin never crossed my mind. Even when I heard Harsin’s name Tuesday morning, I paid little attention.

And then it happened. Word came that Harsin would be named Auburn’s head coach. It was, to say the least, surprising. What does it mean?

The first thing it means is that athletics director Allen Greene got his way. It’s safe to say that few involved in this saga gave more thought to Harsin than I did. In the tug-of-war with trustees and others, Greene didn’t let go of the rope and finally won the approval of president Jay Gogue. It was a bold choice, and a risky one. Wheat does it mean?

It means Auburn is getting a head coach with a terrific record, but one who has not coached in the SEC and has spent most of his life living and then playing and then coaching in Boise, Idaho.

It means Greene has made a move that will be a huge career boost if it works and something else altogether if it doesn’t.

Harsin spent 10 seasons as Chris Petersen’s assistant at Boise, went to Texas as co-offensive coordinator for two seasons and followed Gus Malzahn as head coach at Arkansas State in 2013, going 7-5. He went back to Boise as head coach in 2014.’ He has compiled a 76-24 record in nine seasons as a head coach, 69-19 at Boise State. Now he is on his way to Auburn.

Thus ended the contentious Auburn search that started when Gus Malzahn was fired last Sunday morning.

Like almost every hire, I don’t know if it was good or bad. No coach available would have been any different in that respect. He’ll have an opportunity to answer that question in the brutal world of the Southeastern Conference. Between Alabama to the west and Georgia to the east, it’s more brutal at Auburn than at most places. It’s going to culture shock when compared to the Mountain West Conference.

The outcome was, no doubt, disappointing for Kevin Steele, a good man who deserved better than the personal social media attacks that came from every direction. It put every Auburn assistant coach on notice that their jobs could be in jeopardy. But that’s part of the business, and they all know it. Harsin will need some coaches who have recruited in the SEC, so perhaps some of them will be invited to stay. Those stories are part of every coaching change.

Harsin has the opportunity of a lifetime, and the most difficult challenge of his coaching life. It’s also the most lucrative opportunity of his life.

In the days ahead, we’ll find out who will join him, if any assistant coaches will stay, what his football philosophies are and all the other things that go with being a head football coach in the SEC.

The deal is done. The decision is made. It’s time for Auburn football to move on.

I think Harsin is legit... I may be jaded though from watching so many MWC games over the years and his Boise teams have generally had the best talent, but he's never come off as anything by competent and very competitive from what I've seen.

I get it, not a splash hire by any means. But if you're Auburn, at least this dude isn't going to embarrass in any way. Referring to his Coaching ability, demeanor, the way he dresses (Sorry, Gus), talks to officials, etc. He's a real respectable football coach.

Doesn't put a lot of fear in me but compared to some other coaches in the mix, he's got as good or better of a track record and handles his shit. Time will tell if he can swim in the deep end, but he's got a chance.

Careful peeps we came within a hairs breadth of getting the trailer park queen as First Lady of Bama football. She is a damn sight better looking Mrs. Rich Rod but from the same genre.

He will have PTSD after his first season on the plains, especially if we have the same schedule type next year.

He's not. A Boise State fan pointing out he'd lost 10 out of 88 games by double digits. Before he took over they'd lost 10 by double digits over their last 167 games. (I believe I have those total games correct on the last one.)

Here's what caught my eye this morning. There were three teams in the SEC who had an offense that didn't produce as much as BSU this season: UT, UK, and Vandy. In other words, Gus and Auburn were putting up better numbers this season than Harsin did this year...or last year, or the year...

It's hard to get a grasp on what might happen down their next season. Their only OOC game of note is Penn State. What has that program turned into this season? They are playing horrible ball right now. They do get the two MS schools next season at home along with UGA and Bama. I can easily see a 1-3 record on the road in SEC play (UArk, LSU, A&M, and UofSC.)

I think it is fair to say they had 2 separate searches going on, with Gogue caught in the middle. It appears to be AD Greene (and his search firm and "committee") vs. the Fat Wallets. The Wallets got blocked on Steele, but were aiming high and thought they could pull off the fire and hire and grab Mario away from Oregon. When that blew up on them like an Acme dynamite box on Wile E. Coyote, they just completely assumed the role of the cartoon screwup and chased their Road Runners (Sark, Clark, Napier, etc.) around with every day ending up with the inevitable BANG! Meanwhile, IMO, Greene was quietly trying to undercut them in an effort to preserve his power (and do the job he was hired to do). He had the search firm get him a list of guys with affordable buyouts, since he wouldn't be getting help from the boosters. The money saved on the front end would allow them to cut bait with guys like Steele (and the rest of the staff) thanks to the saved funds, and neuter the Wallet's access/power in the process. If Harsin's buyout was really just $250,000, then him being at the top of Greene's list seems like a no brainer. Greene eventually convinced Gogue that he had the better deal, which is what I think Gogue wanted to hear. IMO, that is sorta how all this went down...
