Now you have to start asking why would certain coaches take certain jobs? I hope Kiffin would be one of those that would tell them to shove it. As I stated earlier, I would like to see this coaching search take on the look and feel of the Viles coaching search and they have to go to like their 5, 6th or 7th choice to get someone to take it.

One thing coaching searches expose about writers is where their allegiance is found. Now, with Sallee, this is a known fact. However, in his role at CBS one should expect him to take a less biased look: even if forced. This is the first time I can recall him so openly admitting this as a fact.

He does "know what he's talking about." And ironically it defines the program. As this team has averaged losing four games a year over the last decade "they are still winning."

Ron Sanders is saying that Auburn won't be hiring Mario with Phil Marshall indicating Auburn can't afford Mario's buyout (9 million.)

I find it a bit more than coincidental just after Beamer was hired at UofSC we started hearing Steele's name linked to the defensive coordinator job in Columbia. It more than a coincidence that we started hearing that story at the same time we started reading the tune's changing with Marshall, Tate, and the like.

FWIW, it been the general consensus both are suggesting Steele is getting the nod.

On one other note:

In your lifetime...

How many times have you seen Auburn have a "list of names" who are interested in their head coaching job only to see they settle for guys like Chizik? Remember, Malzahn wasn't a "top choice" guy either. Heck, Kirby and a few others interviewed for the job before Gus was hired.

And a closing thought...

If there were only a "Hot Board" published just before Auburn hired Tuberville...doubt his name was in the top five.

Seems like hiring Steele would not be an over the top hire on paper at least. I still think if they can't get Freeze they will make a run at Sark with the intent of getting a hot commodity and disrupting Bama's run. That is who they are. They can typically offer enough money to get some interest. I will take the job and then get fired to walk away with $21M...

With regards to Sallee comment, spoken like a true Barner trying to over compensate. They do measure themselves against Bama. Bama is the standard period. If they are not then they are stupid. That is who you are going to have to compete against.

There are very few dominant programs over the course of history in college football. When you think blue blood, I do not think of Auburn. With that being said, I do not see how anyone can be hired and expect Auburn to be in the SEC west championship hunt every year and compete for the ultimate prize. We have gone through several spells of being ok on the college scene in our history and its just plain hard to do year in and year out. What we have experienced with Coach Bryant (older folks) and now Coach Saban is something that every college program strives to have but few accomplish. Some teams get a small taste of glory every now and then but few sustain that caliber of play over the years. I am not sure who Auburn will get to come in and "turn around" the football team....again.

Every program out there that has to face Alabama, especially Auburn, A&M, and Georgia are looking for the Saban clone. They are only going to get a coach that is willing to follow the power brokers instructions. Now does any of Saban’s coaching family tree fit into that category? Kirby Smart was handed the job but turned it down when he was faced with not having complete control over the program. As for Sallee trying to convince everyone that Auburn does not judge it’s self based on what’s going on in the Alabama program. I have one question for you. How many behind closed door Auburn coaches meetings have you attended?

This has been ongoing for awhile now which is one of the things that leads me to think this could end up as a leverage move in spite of Auburn having issues with his buyout on his current contract.
