šŸˆ Are they going for Tua's knee?

Is that a football play?

It looks like that, in this instance, the defender purposely lowered his helmet and dove at the knee. If he had done that to a players head, it could possibly have been declared 'targeting'. I was listening to the game as I was on the road. When I saw a replay of that hit, I was enraged. It...was...obvious!

ROLL TIDE!

I believe they are. Unfortunately the Bama hate is so great now and Tua is a big reason for it. I think that’s the nature of the beast, so to speak, in competition. You go for the other guys weakness.

I remember coach Stallings telling the team not to hurt Brett Favre when we played them. He had been in an automobile accident just prior to the game and was playing with broke ribs(?) or something.
We lost that game btw.

Don't you think I knew this, it was my second Bama game. The first at LF We had a punt return for a TD that was called back for a holding!

absolutely they were! they knew they couldn't win the game with him in there, so they were trying to take him out to give themselves any type of shot at a win.

and it will happen even more-so in 2 weeks. auburn is dirty-ass team, anyway. but they know about his knee so they'll be going after it every chance they get. and if they don't get him, uga will try it, as well.

It was actually targeting by rule...

ā€œNo player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul.ā€

It doesn’t have to be to the neck or head area. Should have been flagged and called. Player made forcible contact with crown of helmet AND meets item #4 in note 1.

ā€œ
  • Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmetā€
Refs sucked in the last two games.

Lost because Bama couldn't catch a dayum punt ...make that punts late in the 4th qtr

Maybe I am naive but I do not think they are. On this specific play, Tua shuffles backwards just before contact which makes the hit at the knee/thigh area otherwise it could have been more of a hit in the gut.

Could it also be that there have been so many targeting calls with hits around the head and neck area that now coaches are coaching them to hit lower to avoid any risk of a targeting call?

There is nothing about that tackle that is proper form. It is spearing/targeting. It’s directed/aimed at his leg/knee. I have full belief it’s intentional with the intent to injur.

This is all more ā€œverifiedā€ by the skirmish after the game and the ā€œchirpingā€ MSU was doing on the field after their loss... classless!

Agree on the tackling technique but it is just hard for me to fathom that a competitor would go out and purposefully try and hurt someone. Respect your opponents and go out and compete against him and try to beat him but hurt him? Just not how I was taught to compete so hard for me to wrap my mind around that idea.

I prefaced my statement with maybe I am naive.:).

on that note, i think Tua saw the hit coming and started to step back...as anyone would. but that doesn't make it right on the defensive player's part.

I'm not so sure about a conspiracy here. It's pretty difficult to premeditate a potential illegal hit to a specific body part. Opportunity just don't present in the moment. No doubt they just want to get a really good hit.
With that said, there were some really poor blocking to allowing that much penetration and an opportunity to get a good lick on Tua. Tua must learn to avoid a good hit, to get down if needed and quit trying to hold on to the ball to make a play. There's nothing wrong with hitting turf.

I don't want to say they were intentionally trying to take his knee out. Maybe they were, maybe they weren't. Regardless of the intent that is clearly targeting though. Forcible contact with the crown of the helmet. And in this case it was only the crown of his helmet that connected to Tua so it's crazy that they missed it. He made no attempt to wrap up.

The sad thing is people will only focus on the phantom block in the back call that negated MSU's TD as if that would have won them the game. At least for that one you can logically see how the official made the mistake. Yes, it was a bad call, but this was a bad no call.

My father's college football was an even nastier game. Those guys would call our version soft.
