🧑‍🍳 An old Beech tree

On our hike yesterday we found a couple of interesting items. First a numbered Beech Tree with an old carving. There were actually several carvings but the only one we could make out was the date.



And the tree was also tagged and numbered. No idea why.


Plus an old dug well at an old homeplace.




And a carving from an old friend. His initials were A.T. so he used the @ symbol and the date.

Awesome, I love the hand dug well. I forget how many beech trees there are in the Alabama woods, until this time of year when they're about the only thing left with brown leaves hanging on.

I'm not familiar but I do wonder. Is the Beech Tree the genotype, and that number represents a phenotype. I've read about guys who number the seeds they put out so they know which they'd like to replicate.

Tim, my scoutmaster told us boys, “the Beech will hold its leaves until the new ones push them off.”

That’s pretty much true.
