Sports and politics had a volatile weekend.

Sports and politics danced in an emotionally-charged weekend across the country.

It started on Friday in Alabama with President Donald Trump's comments about NFL players protesting injustice during the national anthem. He said they should be fired for their actions. It escalated Sunday with players, coaches and owners responding with increased pregame demonstrations.

By Monday, Alabama coach Nick Saban and a few Crimson Tide players weighed in when asked about the rocky marriage between sports and politics.

"I'm just a football coach," Saban said. "I don't keep up with all that stuff as much as maybe everybody else does, especially during the season, especially when we're playing games."

Both defensive back Anthony Averett and running back Damien Harris said this wasn't the time to get into this discussion entering the fifth week of the season.

Linebacker Anfernee Jennings noted Alabama players aren't on the field during the national anthem when most player protests have taken place. He has a view on the matter, though.

"I support what they're doing because I understand and everything," Jennings said. "I support everything they're doing and what they're standing for."

NFL players responded Sunday to Trump's comments that criticized national anthem protests against injustice in the country.

"To me, some of the things that we do in our country when I grew up, they were unifying events and it's a little painful to see that those things are not so right now," Saban said. "But I also respect everyone's rights not to censored in terms of the way they express their beliefs. I'm just a coach. I don't have the answers to all the questions.

"I know that most good things come out of love and respect and compassion and unifying people. Most bad things come out of hate and dislike and deceit. Hopefully we can focus on the above and not the below."

Both Jennings and Harris said there isn't very much political talk in the locker room.

"I think everybody has some thoughts on it, whether you're for or against of whatever your stance may be," Harris said. "But I don't really think now is the time to discuss that."

The unity of a team unit was noted by both Saban and his players.

"People respect and trust the principles and values of the organization but they also respect and trust each other and I think that because everybody has bought into the same thing, you have the same goal," Saban said. "You have the same spirit in terms of what you're trying to accomplish and what you're trying to do. I think it's a very unifying factor when everybody respects -- and because you respect the people, you respect the individual differences as well."

Jennings agrees with that.

"At the end of the day, you have one goal," Jennings said. "It doesn't matter what background, it doesn't matter where you come from. We're trying to accomplish one goal. That's where brotherhood comes in."

The same protest/message is being sent in both photo's. Yet, one paints a completely different picture. Imagine if this would have all started with Kaepernick kneeling, but with his hand/hat over heart. I suspect we'd be living in a completely different climate with these protests today.

Done! I wont use any of them.

This breaks my heart. There are extremists in every race, religion and organization. I don't agree with everything that's going on but I will defend thier right to the freedoms in the constitution until it infringes upon mine or my family's rights. Trump is putting us into a helluva mess. But, can't they see that they are afforded these rights because people of all races fought and died so they could have these rights. RESPECT that, at least!

So you can't be reading this because, my computer is made from Microsoft,

There's the thing(s) about boycott's. A lot of symbolism, very little substance found in many cases.

How many can't just stop using Fed Ex? Or Microsoft?

Personally, am I going to stop using Visa? For one, that would require canceling cards. Secondly, there's changing banks (bankS, with debit cards.) Gatorade? Yah, there's PowerAde but that stuff is horrid. Anheuser-Busch?

As many laughs as we've had with the things Mike Leach has done and said it was quite salient yesterday. When asked about these stories he indicated he'd heard about them, had a slight understanding of what they were protesting but pointed out they hadn't articulated it very well.

I get that. I get what Kaepernick was attempting to do when he started this. He, along with many others, have don't a horrible job articulating their positions in my eyes.

This breaks my heart

It's disturbing because I'm seeing some intelligent people making some comments about this that, at face value, seem apropos. But, when you think about it's just another case of ... well consider this. This was shown to me at a B-day party yesterday.

This is true. No doubt.

But, I had to respond with these questions. When you watch a benediction or invocation at an event on TV do you bow your heads? When you have watched these funerals that have been nationally televised, did you bow your head?

To each asked the answer was "no."

When asked, "what would you do if you were there in person" the response was unanimous--"I'd bow my head."

"Why?"

(mumbling...) "As a sign of respect."

As a vet...600+ days inVN....my opinion
People have the right to protest....
They have the riht to be disrespectful
They have this right to do what ever they want..
Because America provides thos right....strange..yea....but it is what it is...
And people haventhe right to be angry....
Owners have the right to not sign players that dont fit their values...
The POTUS should have stayed out of this....Love him or hat him...
This isnt an issue for that level of government....
And now the hornets are stirred up big time...
Damn...damn..damn

Without a doubt, they've done a terrible job articulating their purpose and goals. In my opinion, all of that is lost now that POTUS has weighed in, he's unified NFL with his comments of late.

Over the last 4 years I've been to ~50 high school football games, ~20 college football games, and 1-2 NFL games. There are always people in the stands talking during the anthem. How many of these folks are vocal on social media...

Covered my opinions as well...

Sports + Politics = Bad entertainment.

I'm already tired of it.

For those lauding Pittsburg's Villanueva you'd better keep the receipts on his jersy... he has recanted

Exactly. He has publicly apologized. People have missed the point of what the Steelers were trying to do. Shocking I know.

Seems like POTUS would have larger issues to deal with, but hey, never miss a chance to try to be a bully. I suspect much of this will fade this weekend when far fewer players, coaches and owners take a knee.

You right on all points here. I wish the POTUS would have stay out but he didn't. He shouldn't have call anyone"SOB" either.

Listen, I won't watch another NFL game on purpose. They have lost me forever. I already didn't like it as much as college but this defintaely ends it for me being a person who consistently tuned in. I think their brand of football isn't very entertaining and now they have turned into a liberal showboat activist organization.

I disagree with why Kapernick started it, I disagree with why they did it last weekend and I will continue to slap the hat off my kids who don't remove it for the anthem and will tell anyone around me to stand still, shut up and show some respect if needed. You want to protest do it on your own dime, not mine.

I watch ESPN for the games only and quickly turn it off whenever sports center or any of their other stupid programming is on because they are putting politics where it doesn't belong. Report sports, show games and stay out of telling me how to be a liberal snowflake. Their primary base audience is conservative people, who own homes and pay for cable yet the try to alienate them.. not a great business model. I would look for them to be sold off to someone soon. Disney has to be losing their a$$ on that deal.

This whole thing makes me sick and for Goddell and the owners to coward down just shows that they are spineless and anti the country that made them all rich. The flag represents different things to different people, not standing, removing your cap and placing it over your heart and showing respect for the people around you for whom it may mean more to is upsetting to me and many others.

Kapernick claims police brutality for his reason, refers to Missouri, New Orleans and Baltimore as examples. ALL of these cases were tried in court and the police were found to have acted correctly. They were found innocent, with black men and women on the jury and in the face of the media, the city, and the court of public opinion already telling everybody they are already guilty. Police don't unfairly target black people. Unfortunately, black people commit a higher percentage of the crime thus have many more opportunities to interact with the police than other people. So his reason is BS. This weekends protest was just anti Trump liberal stupidity.

On another note, I wish Trump would have just kept this off the twitter account and just let the people who are tuning out and not buying jerseys speak for what they feel about it. NFL viewership was way down after this crap started last year and will be down even further this year if they keep this up. Mix that with watered down football with pussifying the game, moms not letting kids play because of concussion fears and everything else.. they won't have a business to screw up much longer.
