🏈 🏈 FALL CAMP 2019 🏈 Tide preps for season opener

Alabama returned to the field Monday and endured the heat. The temperature was 88 degrees as the players were in shells and shorts.

Here are some observations from the limited period of access provided to the media:

— Tight end Miller Forristall (foot), defensive end LaBryan Ray (ankle) and defensive back Nigel Knott, who has an unspecified medial issue, were not spotted.

— Running back Najee Harris wasn’t wearing the black, non-contact jersey he donned during the open practice Saturday. Offensive lineman Darrian Dalcourt, receiver Xavier Williams, and defensive backs Jalyn Armour-Davis and Scooby Carter were also back in standard-issue jerseys after wearing black Saturday.

— Dylan Moses and Josh McMillon continued to lead the inside linebacker drills. Markail Benton and Jaylen Moody followed immediately after them.

— Cornerback Trevon Diggs wore a black sleeve on his left leg two days after trainers attended to him when he started to limp upon fielding a punt.

— Chadarius Townsend is back with the receivers after he moonlighted at running back during the spring.

— Former Alabama coach Ray Perkins was in attendance and was greeted by strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran.

— Patrick Surtain II lined up at Star as he did on Saturday. Last season, he played 87 percent of his snaps at outside cornerback, according to ProFootballFocus.com

So it's Surtain that may be the Star... With Shy staying in a consistent safety role.... With the potential of Jobe as that other CB. As JAD get's healthy he may push for playing time as well.

BTW I love the idea of Carter staying at Safety if that's the case. It seems like any serious breakdowns come from that position not understanding exactly where to be. And by all accounts he totally understands it. Plus the days of a big thumping safety are gone... Gimme a smart/anticipating pass defender all day. RTR

To date, and as we know these things can change in August ...

Carter has remained at safety in both nickel and dime. Jobe has come in for both packages as well. Mayden is at safety when they're in dime with McKinney at Money.

In regular, we're looking at Surtain and Diggs on the corners with McKinney and Carter as the safeties.
🔝 He's been saying that for weeks now.

Man, Bama has some big people on that practice field. Davis, Neal Evans, Womack, etc. I really enjoyed watching the LBers go through some of their sets. Sunseri was giving it to Ben Davis about some of his striking techniques.

Listening to some of the Bama guys watching practice early on and most seem excited about Josh McMillion. I thought it was interesting that they mentioned that he has his engineering degree, They've been saying he's a really smart guy. Maybe that's what we ultimately need to settle down the position this year.

I'm glad you brought this up. I like what I'm learning and it's fitting with the way I had hoped fall camp would give us.

Shane Lee is continuing to turn heads. If he continues on this path he's going to be really good. I say that to say this...as much as Bama can use Lee on the field ...

...they'll also need to spell Lewis at SAM. McMillon knows the position well and could play there giving Bama:

Jennings,
Lee,
Moses,
McMillon

Regular.

It's a tough season and guys are gonna get nicked up too. The first 4 games should be great for getting our team much-needed reps. And I've seen enough of Deonta Brown already to know that he's just a blocking beast. Hard to keep him from getting his spot back when he's off suspension. I believe Dickerson gets a job, he's quick and being spoken about as a guy with good technique. I mentioned Neal Evan's size. He dwarfs Jedric Wills in one on one drills. And Wills is a big guy. I know LSU has been given the nod for OL talent but it's hard to believe they will put a better starting 5 on the field than Alabama.

Do we give Anoma the assist on Shane Lee? I watched him play against lee County in one of those high school best vs best games when St. Francis came to South Georgia, and he was a lot of fun to watch. I heard Spring went well for him, so I'm expecting him to get plenty of snaps this Fall.

I'm glad you brought him up. We're beginning to see the lines of communication on the field that we've talked about so much this off season.

We've already heard how Saban talks about Shy. So, let's look at this from his perspective ... he's got his guys lined up.

We move to the backers and we've seen McMillon praised on how well he knows the positions.

I took note of something Shy said the other day when talking about Surtain. Along with his size and being able to cover slot receivers from the STAR position, he also talked about how he understood the position mentally. Mentally. There's that assignment football in nickel and another great link in communication.

It's note worthy we're not talking about Diggs here: a guy that knows the safety roles and the roles of a corner. Or, for that matter, mentioning Moses when getting the front seven lined up correctly.

It's only August, but you can say things are shaping up well. I'm getting a pretty good idea how they're going to attack this season, personnel wise.

Is McMillon going to end up as a Tana Patrick type of guy?

A pretty good comparison.

If we look at say, 2013, they'd need Shane to be able to step into CJ's role to supplant him so right now I see McMillon getting more playing time than Tana. Right now they don't have that OR Reggie in place. Benton isn't there yet from what I understand.
