TUSCALOOSA — Following the departure of 10 starters from last season, including seven on defense, Alabama has several first-team holes to fill.

Here are the five biggest position battles to keep an eye on during Alabama’s preseason practices that start in August.

Starting right tackle (Matt Womack and Alex Leatherwood) — This will be one of the most watched position battles. As a former three-star product, Womack spent much of spring practice working with the first-team offense after rising sophomore Jonah Williams slid over to left tackle. Meanwhile, the 6-foot-6, 327-pound Leatherwood came to Tuscaloosa in January as the much-ballyhooed five-star product but appeared to struggle at times with the transition to college. Much like Williams and former three-year starting left tackle Cam Robinson before him, Leatherwood is making progress in Alabama’s offseason training program. But until he shows he’s ready for the big time, usually through some semblance of consistency and reliability, expect Womack to continue to be the guy the Tide coaches turn to.

Change-of-pace/backup running back (Josh Jacobs and Najee Harris) — Given how Alabama utilizes its tailbacks, this position could involve several candidates during the season. But with the expectation that returning junior co-starters Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough will begin as dual lead backs, the focus here is on Jacobs and five-star freshman Najee Harris. Jacobs returns after splashing onto the scene last year with 585 rushing yards and four touchdowns as a three-star signee from Oklahoma. Harris arrived in January as one of the nation’s most highly coveted players. The two couldn’t be more different physically — Jacobs is 5-10 and just over 200 pounds, while Harris is a chiseled 6-2 and 227 in the mold of Scarbrough and Heisman-winning running back Derrick Henry. But each has proven to be reliable pass catchers and tough runners.

No. 3/slot receiver (Cam Sims and Jerry Jeudy) — With the expectation that junior Calvin Ridley is the lead receiver and redshirt senior Robert Foster would be No. 2, this battle pits a little-utilized senior (Sims) against a five-star freshman (Jeudy). Sims is the bigger, more physical of the two at 6-5 and 205, while the 6-1, 184-pound Jeudy is more in the mold of Ridley, who set Alabama’s freshman receiving record just two years ago. Jeudy already has impressed with his big-play ability downfield, including leading the team with 134 receiving yards and two touchdowns in April’s A-Day game. Despite his ability and size, Sims’ career has been little more than untapped potential. Given their differences, the winner of this battle could give an early indication of how the passing attack under new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will shape out.

Starting Jack/outside linebacker (Anfernee Jennings and Terrell Hall) — The winner of this position will be replacing arguably one of the Tide’s best pass rushers in recent memory, Tim Williams. Jennings is a physically imposing redshirt sophomore at 6-3 and 265-plus pounds, while Hall is long and rangy at 6-5 and 251 with athleticism that could easily translate to the basketball court. Both started in the A-Day spring game, with Jennings racking up three tackles and a sack with the first-team defense and Hall pulling in a 60-yard pick-six to lead the second-team defense. There’s little doubt both will play significant roles this year, regardless of who starts the season opener. Hall appears to be the more natural pass rusher of the two, but Jennings has shown himself the more well-rounded candidate and better run-stuffer, which could factor into the coaches’ decision-making.

Starting kicker (Joseph Bulovas and Andy Pappanastos) — This will be another battle involving the hotshot freshman (Bulovas) versus the underperforming senior (Pappanastos). Bulovas was a late add to Alabama’s 2017 signing class after another kicker decommitted, while Pappanastos is a Montgomery product who transferred from Ole Miss a year ago. As the long place-kicker on the roster at the time, Pappanastos was ineffective during spring practice, including missing both field-goal tries in the A-Day game. Alabama head coach Nick Saban, while unable to speak his name due to recruiting restrictions, effectively declared his hope that Bulovas wins the starting kicking job. The three-star kicker from Mandeville, Louisiana, is the front-runner to win the job.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Jennings in the base and Hall utilized much like Williams, at least to begin the season. I feel bullish about this group's ability to generate a rush with our 4-man front.

Not to high jack the thread but what happened to Pettibone? I know he got hurt but I haven't heard a word about him in a long time. As far as the article, OL the RT in particular, is a a huge hole to fill. Placekicker is also an area we have to have someone that can be consistent.

He was just getting back up to game playing speed in the middle of last season. As I recall, it was around the Mississippi State game that he saw his first action in college. Don't forget, he's only in his second year of eligibility.

Head case(s) and kickers. I can't say we've seen a better example than Adam. Bulovas is said to not have as strong of a leg as Adam, but early reports have him being more consistent.

(It's crazy with Adam when I consider all the times the staff did things while hoping it would help his "thought process." He still had issues when he wasn't even in games. One of his NFL workouts had reports of him having a great leg, but he just wasn't' consistent enough to get a further look.

Love the article, thanks for posting.

1. What a pleasant surprise Womack could be? Didn't we steal him from LSU? Kind of an under the radar prospect, somehow (despite being like 6'7 300 lbs), and has quietly put himself in position to be a big time player. Always like his athleticism for a guy that big... Just wasn't sure if he was physical or had the FB IQ to compete as a starter. But sure seems like he's got the inside shot. Leatherwood will be a force... Just don't know when.

2. RB's.. What a good problem to have. All I know is that if Jacobs doesn't get at least 5 touches a game that is a travesty. Love what N. Harris can potentially bring also. IMO it will eventually be Bo Scar as the odd man out... Health reasons. Seems like a long time ago, but for much of the year Harris and Jacobs were just as good or better.

3. WR. Seems inevitable for Jeudy to be the #3 guy. If Sims is a can block maybe he can have the Deiter role of full time blocker. Not sure we've ever had legit production from that slot position but wherever Jeudy goes, the ball will find him. Kid is special. The other freshman will be threats also... Sims will have to have a very good camp.

4. Jack/OLB - Jennings has all the makings of an Upshaw type of player. Beast in run game and problem on passing downs. Hall is just so intriguing though... Freakish athlete and could be really versatile. As someone mentioned, maybe the play him as a DL on passing downs? Either way he has to see the field. Lots of subs and rotations in those OLB positions, both will be fun to watch, but Jennings looks like the adult in the room with some young bucks behind him.

5. Kickers - Who the hell knows

6. ILB - Interested to see how the depth develops... Seems like with the physicality of that position, we always need depth. Evans/SDH as starters, but is Mack Wilson the clear cut #3 or is Mosley or Holcombe catching him? Guys better strap it up when they get a chance... May not see the field again with all that talent in the mix!

If you think back, you'll remember how his recruitment went. He'd committed to LSU over the summer of '14 after attending their summer camp. Even with the LSU staff knowing he would look around over the fall, they still signed him to a financial aid agreement (and continued with their unlimited contact.) As soon as he pulled away from LSU and committed to the Tide, LSU was hit with recruiting violations due to their contact.

I don't know if we can use the term "under the radar." Bama had him in for camp in '13, LSU had him in '14, along with Arkansas and the Mississippi schools. Ohio State and Florida jumped in with offers that fall along with several other big programs. The ol' Crystal Ball on 247 had him 100% to Ole Miss as I recall.

Now, one issue with Matt was his weight. Before his visit in the summer of '14 he'd been to Bama and weighed in carrying 330 lbs+ and was considered a step slow at RT. Fast forward to the fall of that year and he'd already dropped 15 or so pounds. His story, to me, is one of a kid that was out of shape, over weight, and, well, slow. It took a lot of work for him to get down to where he was when he reported--work done on his own. (That's one of the reasons Napier was so high on him when he was being recruited.) In reality, it was an eval thing. That addition of a lot of weight came with growth spurts and those recruiting him were looking at what he may become.

You're assuming Foster is in at #2 even with him still having a hard time with assignments. He's struggling, still, much like Cotton was last year on the offensive line. There's no question about his physical talent. It's my suspicion they'll handle this a lot like we've seen them handle Jake at the QB role--they'll take the good with the mistakes to start off the season.

A lot, including myself, didn't care for Lane's comment "dumb players make dumb plays." A lot don't care for the absolute truth when hearing it hurts--we'll see how we look back at his time at Bama next February.

I see... Well Saban loves dependability. Foster better tighten up soon!

Do you remember the Keith Brown touchdown against Florida back in '05? The second quarter, Bama up by 14 as I recall, and Brown was hit on a quick slant route and just took off--blew by the Florida secondary.

Foster has that ability. The kid can fly! I can see him having a half of a dozen touchdowns that way alone this season if he's hit in route. He's just got that type of break-away speed.

What we don't know is the extent of the responsibilities Daboll is going to put on him this fall. I'll likely watch the first game a few times just to pay attention to those things and see what jumps out.

Just a reliable kicker...is this to much to ask...
We have to go back to 2014 to find the first game kicking actually had something to do with a loss. The team has lost twice in the last two years and Adam didn't miss a FG in either game.

I believe Terry said something in the last few days about the kicker and said his leg wasn't as strong but he's been consistent.
