Alabama junior point guard Ricky Tarrant will miss the remainder of the season with a ruptured plantar fascia, the university announced Thursday afternoon.

The injury occurred during the Jan. 27 game against Florida, and Tarrant hasn't played since, missing the last eight games.

Averaging 13.1 points per game, Tarrant ranked as the team's second-leading scorer. He started 13 games and averaged two assists per game along with 1.4 steals.

Tarrant played this season with a knee injury that required surgery. Before the start of the season, the UA medical staff discovered a bony prominence in Tarrant's left knee, but the team elected to delay the surgery until after the season.

Given the latest injury, Alabama elected to hold Tarrant out for the rest of the season to allow him to began rehabilitation.

""We have decided to shut Ricky down the rest of the year," Alabama head coach Anthony Grant said. "He has been dealing with a couple of different injuries with his foot and knee. We felt his foot was not progressing well enough to return to action in the next few weeks and knowing about his knee surgery, we all felt it was in his best interest to move forward with the procedure at this time."

Tarrant out for the season

Alabama's injury problems continue heading into its Saturday game at Vanderbilt, but one player who is definitely out is guard Ricky Tarrant, who has not played since January 27 and will officially miss the rest of the season.

In addition to Tarrrant, Crimson Tide head coach Anthony Grant said that forward Shannon Hale, who injured his foot in the first half of the South Carolina game last Tuesday, would "almost certainly not be available" at Vanderbilt. Forward Michael Kessens, who sat out the South Carolina game due to a deep bone bruise on his knee, will be "a game time decision" on Saturday, according to Grant.

Tarrant, who sat out last season after transferring from Tulane, suffered a ruptured plantar fascia in the game against Florida on Jan. 27 and has missed the Crimson Tide's last eight contests. In addition, prior to the season, the Alabama medical staff diagnosed a bony prominence in Tarrant's left knee that would require surgery to correct.

The original plan was to do the surgery after the season, but the Alabama coaches and medical staff felt it was in Tarrant's best interest to proceed with the surgery as soon as possible to get a head start on the recovery process.

"We have decided to shut Ricky down the rest of the year," Grant said. "He has been dealing with a couple of different injuries with his foot and knee. We felt his foot was not progressing well enough to return to action in the next few weeks and knowing about his knee surgery, we all felt it was in his best interest to move forward with the procedure at this time."

Tarrant is the team's No. 2 scorer, averaging 13.1 points per game. He led the Crimson Tide with four 20-point games on the year.
