📝 Alabama to host more than 40 recruits ranked four-stars or higher this weekend.

Then can we get a couple of defensive linemen to commit for crying out loud?
Three to keep an eye on:
  • Javon Kinlaw,
  • LaBryan Ray and
  • Phidarian Mathis.

Isaiah Buggs talked with the staff ... Org probably has the upper hand here but we'll see.

I really like the kid from IMG, Kaindoh. I've been told Saban is after him, personally.

Parks looks to be leaning towards Bama and there's one other guy that I can't remember his name they're after ... it's a Bible name, I think. Damn...memory is shot this morning.

*** We're seeing the side-effects of recruiting sites more than ever now. One guy takes a visit and then he's got 50 sites calling him for reactions.

AND, let's not forget. The articles coming out after visits aren't worth the bandwidth 95% of the time. A kid will say, "had a great weekend, we really hit each other in drills." That in turn is written, "it's a great family environment, I love the coaching staff, I feel at home and can see myself wearing (insert color) next fall.

Baron Browning decision on hold

Baron Browning
, five-star linebacker from Kennedale High School in Texas, was expected to announce his college decision today. He took an official visit to Ohio State this past weekend. His high school coach revealed the news of the delay in the announcement.

Alabama was considered the frontrunner prior to his visit to Columbus. The Buckeyes were considered the favorite prior to his official visit to Alabama in October. A lot of people are speculating his decision to hold off from an announcement is due to new Texas head coach Tom Herman wanting to meet with him. Browning was considered a Texas lean early in his recruitment.

The more people I have talked to in the last 24 hours about Browning the more I still think it's a battle between Alabama and Ohio State. This is subject to change, but people on the Texas side believe it's too little too late. I think he is torn between Alabama and Ohio State at this time. We may not get a decision in the next few weeks. It may not come until January 7 at the U.S. Army All-American game.

Alabama doesn't really know how much things have turned/changed since the visit and the decision to hold off from an announcement. Alabama was certainly expecting good news on Tuesday evening prior to the delay. The Alabama coaching staff still believes it has an excellent chance to land his commitment whenever he chooses to announce.

Tide turning for Solomon?

Aubrey Solomon, Rivals100 defensive tackle from Lee County High School in Leesburg, Georgia, has been high on Alabama's wish list for a long time. He favored Alabama in the spring before his commitment to Michigan. Alabama didn't expect his commitment to the Wolverines to last long and he decommitted.

Alabama needed to knock it out of the park with Solomon and his mother this past weekend. They did just that. Alabama knows it has a great shot to sign him. It's a battle until he is ready to decide. It will come down to Alabama and Georgia. Michigan is still in it, but I don't expect him to go north.

Who else on the DL?

A few other heavily recruited targets were in Tuscaloosa on Saturday for the Iron Bowl including LaBryan Ray, Rivals100 defensive end from James Clemens High School in Madison, Alabama, Malik Herring, Rivals100 defensive end from Mary Parsons High School in Forsyth, Georgia, and Javon Kinlaw, three-star defensive tackle from Jones County Community College in Ellisville, Mississippi.

Alabama remains in great shape for Ray. He plans to take all official visits in January. It will surprise me if he signs elsewhere. Herring had a great visit, but not expected to sign with Alabama. He's a take, but UGA remains the heavy favorite.

Javon Kinlaw can't take an official visit to Alabama or technically recruited until he completes two semesters in junior college. He is currently in his second semester. Kinlaw has been allowed to take a couple visits to Alabama this fall, but by NCAA rule is not allowed to spend time speaking with the coaching staff. It will change come January. Alabama definitely believes its a major contender.

Isaiah Buggs, five-star defensive tackle from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston, will take an official visit to Alabama in January. Phildarian Mathis, three-star defensive tackle from Neville High School in Monroe, Louisiana, will also visit Alabama.

Mathis will choose between Alabama and LSU. I've heard Alabama likes its chances more with Mathis with Coach O being hired which is sort of the opposite of what I originally thought would happen. Alabama feels good about it though.

A lot of talk about Josh Kaindoh, five-star defensive end from IMG Academy in Brandenton, Florida, after his decommitment from Maryland. He is visiting Alabama next weekend. (Update on this one- Kaindoh could be a guy the coaching staff may consider taking once he makes it to campus. They really want to get him on campus to meet with the coaching staff and just get a good idea of how he is off the field).

So what about Najee?

Najee Harris, five-star running back from Antioch High School in California, returned to Tuscaloosa for an official visit with his mother. This was another red carpet roll out by the Crimson Tide. They made him feel back at home, and very comfortable with everything.

There was a time, several months ago, where many felt a difficult task to keep him committed including some members of the coaching staff. Alabama has done a marvelous job recruiting him an feel very confident he will stick with his commitment. Harris and his mom love everything about Alabama. Will he still visit Michigan? That's the plan, but it's a very long shot for him to flip to any other school.

Just one more WR?

For months we've been discussing the strong possibility of Henry Ruggs, four-star wide receiver from Lee High School in Montgomery, and DeVonta Smith, Rivals100 wide receiver from Amite High School in Louisiana, joining the Crimson Tide's class. Both prospects were set to announce their college decisions in August- Ruggs on August 1 and Smith on August 15. Both opted to delay their decision until after their senior season. Nico Collins, five-star wide receiver from Clay-Chalkville High School in Alabama, is also still recruited by Alabama.

Alabama's class is filling up fast, and other positions are frankly more important. It looks like Alabama will only take one more wide receiver in this class. The most likely scenario is Ruggs.

Ruggs has really emerged as the Tide's top target at the position with his senior season performance. I've said this time and time again- he has always had a spot in this class whenever he was ready to commit.

Alabama really likes all three players. It's just time to wrap things up at the position. Ready to get one more on board. I'll go with Ruggs for now.

Is there a situation where Alabama takes two more receivers? Possibly. It's just not in the cards at this time.

Bama fading for OL?

Alabama has one of the best offensive line classes in recent memory with five commitments including three five-stars. There has been a lot of talk about Alabama likely landing a sixth offensive lineman in this year's class with Isaiah Wilson, five-star tackle from Poly Prep in Brooklyn, New York, and Trey Smith, Rivals100 offensive tackle from University of Jackson School in Tennessee.

Here's what I'm hearing as of today- Alabama believes its trailing Tennessee for Smith at this time. Will UA accept a commitment from him? Yes. He has a spot if he wants to commit. Tennessee struggled greatly this fall which really opened the door for Alabama with Smith (his sister works in the athletic department at UT).

I'm told as of today, Alabama feels it's 60/40 with UT leading. Can it change in the next week? Maybe. That's just where UA feels as of today.

Wilson took an official visit to Alabama this past weekend. I know there has been some glowing remarks about the way Wilson feels about Alabama, but Alabama really has yet to put the full court press on him. Waiting to see what happens with Trey Smith? The general feel is Wilson will sign with Michigan. I'm interested to see if things change once Smith announces his decision. Alabama has the best OL class in the country regardless of what happens with these prospects.

Any change with DBs?

I think we are still in status quo for defensive backs. I know most have expected a flip from Shaun Wade, five-star cornerback and Ohio State commitment from Trinity Christian in Jacksonville, Florida. I don't think anyone really knows what he is going to do including Alabama. Ohio State still feels good about keeping him, but only time will tell if the distance will play a major factor. He also has family in Alabama.

Alabama is trying to add at least three more defensive backs to the class. There are still a lot of names out there. Deangelo Gibbs, Daniel Wright, Devon Hunter all remain in the mix. JaCoby Stevens took an official visit to Alabama this weekend. The visit went really well, but he remains solid with LSU. He says he will make a final decision between the two schools. Alabama expects him to stick with LSU for now.

Is Jarez Parks still a possibility?

Yes, Parks remains in play. I consider Alabama the favorite right now.

So what in the world is Alabama going to do with these numbers? (Repost from Monday)

You know a lot people look at grayshirting as who are the lowest ranked players in the class. Not so much this year. Alabama wants every player currently committed. The staff will not ask the guys ranked three-stars if they will grayshirt because of the lower ranking.

I believe the staff is currently struggling to decide what to do because of how many good players are wanting to join the class/have joined the class. They may try to feel out who wouldn't mind taking a grayshirt. I think they will begin asking sooner rather than later.

I always say don't worry about the numbers. No need to worry about them. The coaching staff will work it out and always do. Difficult? Absolutely. Happy with the end result? For certain.

One other thing:
One thing I think a lot of people don't realize is when these recruits come in town for official visits the Alabama coaches ask players on the team to spend time with them to get an idea if they think they can handle being a part of the team from a mental standpoint. There have been several situations in the past where players have been 'major' targets, but after the official visit weekend they are no longer considered.

Right, but it still looks like they didn't want to come. So much we don't know about being a fit with their personalities and mental approach to the game, even their approach to discipline. That's why I've learned to just wait from a respectful distance, emotionally speaking. I like being pleasantly surprised.
