Through the years we've talked about different "innovations" in the sport. We've discussed rule changes under Bryant. More recently, the use of video chat with Saban which took other schools by surprise, but was soon imitated.

Here's another one. Can anyone name a college program that had a General Manager position before Morgan "got off the plane?" I'm sure there is; I just haven't heard of one.

I do know that other schools implemented the position rather quickly when they saw what was going on in Tuscaloosa.

I think a lot of it is the morphing of college football into the pro football model... these Power 4 type teams aren't going to be able to operate to their full potential without having a someone(s) in a more traditional NFL type GM role going forward... We hit on it back in February, but Saban started the trend years ago with the expanded off field staff and had guys in a GM type role... but, they didn't have to oversee things such as NIL, roster retention, portal, and the soon-to-be incoming responsibilities of player contracts. It's whole new ball game now, and the smarter schools are getting out in front of the changes. Ole Miss for example, hired that Glasscock dude for their GM role. auburn grabbed Will Redmond from LSU... they previously had a former NFL scout serving in a similar GM role/position. So yeah, they've been around, but as the landscape of CFB is changing, the roles and value of the GM positions are changing too. The level of importance is much greater than it was even just 2 years ago.
