I'm not trying to be a debbie downer, I truly just want to understand. I want to trust DeBoer and the coaching staff, that they know what the team needs and doesn't need. But from my perspective Bama has had 23 players enter the portal and only 6 coming in from the portal. The recruiting class has 22 coming in, and how many are graduating/leaving early for the NFL? I don't understand how the roster is at 85 or close to it. Also, Bama has let a lot of elite young talent leave, such as Jeremiah Alexander and Jaren Hamilton. Bama probably will have some really good starters next year, but how will they have depth? How will Bama survive the inevitable injury bug? This is what concerns me. Help me understand that CKD is effectively managing the roster and positioning the team for a playoff run this next season. I just want to understand. Thanks.

I didn't add the specialists to the chart, but post 1, page 1, has it laid out there. It is updated regularly. I don't have the scholarship count on there, but it would be sitting around 79-80 as of this morning based on what "we" know. The portal for Bama closes tonight at midnight, in terms of guys having their paperwork submitted. The staff is still actively looking at several positions to backfill while keeping in mind that portal season II opens post spring, when they'll have an even clearer picture of their needs.

I was hopeful that #4 would have skipped the Bowl so we could see if Ty is really a candidate to be a starter in 2025 but that failed. Depending on the results of spring drills Bama could have only a true freshman and the transfer from Washington on the roster. If Ty can't be the man then he has to leave.

Bama has to find some glue to improve this team. UGA is in the same position as is most of the teams in the SEC. There is entirely way too many dollar 1st players running the show. Look around at these playoff teams both winners and losers.

I'd personally be somewhere between shocked and stunned if Simpson isn't the clear cut #1 as spring wraps up. I do think they'll bring in a depth piece at QB though at some point to have 4 on scholarship. Certainly some other areas of need too... specifically, DL.

Yep, I'd love to see a Quinnen Williams force in the middle and we need some absolute speed on one of the corners for a pass rush. We did not have that this year and it hurt us a lot.

The timing with Ty and Jalen and their development is something I don't think any staff could see.

In '23, neither were really "ready" to take the starting role. Jalen won the battle; a better option for the win, right? Ty was a head case back then.

Fast forward a year. Both have progressed. Jalen has the room. I don't remember any reports from anyone mentioning Ty regressing. Everything I've heard is how he's maturing into the role. Skills? They've never been a question; until now?

(Setting aside '24 and Jalen but using it to point to something ... )

I'd have to literally "check notes" the last few days to see which coach said this. When discussing the offense of '24 they said there were less than a dozen plays they ran at UW used in the offense at Bama last season. Earlier this year, less than twenty-five percent was mentioned by another.

Where does that leave the perceptions of the offensive side of the ball next season with Ty? I don't have a reason to doubt him. I want to see how he responds to a game: not A-day. That first pick ...

Let's work off of what Brandon said above...

There isn't anyone I know that isn't telling me Ty is QB1 heading into spring. Nothing has changed other than his progression. Think about this, guys. We've talked about how strong he's shown his arm to be. We've discussed about how he can throw pretty well when he's scrambling, he is showing he has a good imagination under pressure. I've heard a lot of people say, "he can make all the throws."

So, maturity. There isn't anyone I know who hasn't said he's matured quite a bit off the field. I've heard about how he's improved "between the ears" on the field over the last summer and this past season.

Yes. We all want to see him in a game. When we do I believe we're going to see some plays that ... well, let's just call it "stupid." But, that has to be taken in context with who he is, how he's cut. I hate comparisons, but I gotta go with Favre here. Ty is one to sling it around.

I kinda thought Ty might have been the better choice over Milroe this season to be honest. I thought he was much crisper in the spring game than Milroe was. Now, I understand it’s a spring game and not a real game. Get that. I just kinda felt like we are built more for a pocket passer that’s heavy on play action vs the Vince Young make magic happen on the fly offense.

I think it’s absolutely Ty’s job to lose this season. We should know how it’s going come spring portal time. IMO

From the few times I’ve seen Simpson on the field I have been impressed. I feel like he can be the man next year and hopefully a leader in the clubhouse. My real concern is the Oline and receiver depth. On the defensive side I like the front 7 and the secondary, especially if Jackson comes back. But again the concern is depth.

I love a gunslinger, especially this day in age. Getting a defense on their heels and chasing receivers all over the place just screams points to me. It also always makes you dangerous with the ability to claw back into a game.

Another one in the mold of DeVonta Smith... Bama didn't want to lose him. Maybe they can reel him back in.

Welp, all this tells me is one thing...... it's time to put Qua Russaw at ILB. Do it.... do it.

But seriously, I hope we can get him back. It makes no sense to me as to why he's leaving, he's gonna get plenty of playing time next season. From my pov, anyway..... I figured he'd play himself into some playing time. I know they see that Lawson and Jefferson are coming back, on top of Hill-Green as well, and maybe think they wont see the field very much. One thing I hate about the portal is how it drives away players from competition, shit is soft.

As Bama’s portal door closes for the winter, let's look back at the team losses and gains thus far...

Players Transferring from Alabama
DL Jehiem Oatis (to Colorado)
DL Hunter Osborne (to Virginia)
DL Damon Payne (to Michigan)
Edge Keanu Koht (to Vanderbilt)
Edge Jayshawn Ross
LB/Edge Jeremiah Alexander
LB Serling Dixon
LB Justin Okoronkwo
DB Jahlil Hurley (to Kansas)
S DeVonta Smith (to Notre Dame)
S King Mack
QB Dylan Lonergan (to Boston College)
RB Justice Haynes (to Michigan)
OL Miles McVay (to North Carolina)
OL Elijah Pritchett
TE Ty Lockwood
WR Kobe Prentice (to Baylor)
WR Caleb Odom (to Ole Miss)
WR Kendrick Law (to Kentucky)
WR Emmanuel Henderson (to Kansas)
WR Jaren Hamilton
WR Amari Jefferson

The staff lost very few guys that they really made an effort to keep, and they did keep 2 that they tried hard to keep (Jaylen Mbakwe and Danny Lewis). DeVonta Smith was another that the staff tried to hold onto, but when family considerations are in play, that becomes extra difficult. Justin Okoronkwo leaving will hurt if they can't get him back. Overall though, Bama managed to get through the portal period pretty well. Despite what some may assume, they didn't fight to keep Pritchett. Or Odom. Or Haynes. There were a few depth pieces they'd have preferred to keep, but not enough to renegotiate deals irresponsibly or promise playing time. Certainly worth mentioning too, they held onto several key pieces on both sides of the ball that were key, most of which were tampered with by other teams in some form or fashion. In the end, they held onto their core group of guys, other than the NFL entries. If you've been following along and paying attention, that isn't a surprise. But that doesn't make it any less impressive. Morgan & Co. earned their keep the last few weeks. It may not have been completely perfect, but it could have been much, much worse without a plan and the staff locking some guys down.

Players Transferring to Alabama
EDGE Kelby Collins (from Florida)
LB Nikhai Hill-Green (from Colorado)
CB Cameron Calhoun (from Utah)
OL Kam Dewberry (from Texas A&M)
OL Arkel Anugwom (from Ball State)
WR Isaiah Horton (from Miami)

There's a mix there of players that should start on day 1 and also some depth help. A few more will be signed to fill out some areas of need. Pretty much any position on offense can be added to if they find the right guy, but they could really use another QB, TE, and OT. On the other side of the ball, DL is a priority. EDGE LB, ILB, and another body at corner are also need areas. They’ve got some time and another portal window to get it all ironed out. And they will.
