🏈 Alabama Promotes Lupoi To Outside Linebackers Coach

Maybe someone can help me here, but what makes a guy a good recruiter? I mean, all of the coaches are able to talk about their program to the fullest extent, they know the academics side, what they can offer these recruits, everything about the guys they visit etc. It doesn't appear age or tenure matter, because these guys move around so much that they have to sell new schools all the time, and they range in age.

I personally think I would be a killer recruiter because I can relate and talk to anyone. Having the passion for college football and a program like Alabama, how hard could it be to sell a recruit and his family? Alabama has the facilities, the bells and whistles to sell itself once they get on campus. I mean, you've got to be able to communicate to coach, so I wouldn't think the inability to communicate would be the problem. I'd like to hear from some folks and about what they think.

I think you have to know the things a kid wants to hear, getting to the league, etc. For the parents, what programs your school has and can their son get into said program and succeed. Getting the kid onto campus for that official is probably the biggest battle.

Hopefully he is a good coach

I like the history of his coaching experience. PAC12, in the toss it around A LOT days, both with Washington and Cal. He's a Cal grad; got some smarts, ya know? After spending a year in the role he's had I'm betting he knows our defense pretty damn well. A big step up from Thompson.

Here's his bio when at Washington.

________

Tosh Lupoi was named Washington's defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator on January, 16, 2012. Lupoi came to Washington from California where he'd spent the previous four years as defensive line coach. Lupoi was the youngest full-time coach in Cal history when he joined the staff at the age of 26 in 2008 and remained the youngest Pac-10 coach for two additional seasons. In all, he was associated with Cal football for 12 years having spent six as a Golden Bear player (2000-05, which included an extra season due to a medical redshirt), two as a graduate assistant (2006-07) and four as defensive line coach. Cal's 2011 defense ranked No. 1 overall in the Pac-12 Conference. They gave a conference best 332.9 yards per game, were third in total sacks collecting 34, gave up the fewest first downs per game (17.4) and allowed the fewest passing yards per game (204.2). The Bears' 2010 defense also led the Pac-10 and ranked in the top 25 nationally in per-game averages for sacks (2.83 per game, No. 13), total defense (319.08 yards per game, No. 18) and pass defense (187.00 yards per game, No. 21). Cal was also first in the Pac-10 in first downs allowed (217) and second in opponents' third down conversion percentage (34.7%). The team's pass efficiency defense and scoring defense, which held opponents to 17 points or less in eight of 12 games, were both third in the Pac-10, as well as 31st and 40th nationally. Lupoi has helped develop first-round NFL Draft picks each of the last two drafts in defensive lineman Tyson Alualu and Cameron Jordan, making Cal only the second Pac-10 team to have ever had defensive linemen selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in back-to-back years.

Tosh Lupoi was promoted to the Alabama football team's outside linebackers coach, coach Nick Saban announced today.

Lupoi was an analyst on staff last season. He was previously an assistant coach at California and Washington, where he worked with the linebackers and defensive linemen.

"We are happy to have Tosh on board as a full-time assistant coach," Saban said in a press release. "Tosh has impressed me during his time here over the course of last year and he will be a great addition to our defensive staff. He's a high-energy guy and we feel like he will be able to contribute some new ideas both as a coach on the field as well as his role as in recruiting."

Lupoi worked with the linebackers at Washington from 2012-13 and with the defensive line at California from 2008-11.

He was also the Rivals.com recruiter of the year in 2010, and played defensive line for Cal from 2000-05.

"This is an incredible opportunity," Lupoi said in a press release. "I'm extremely fortunate to join the best college football organization in the country. ... I couldn't be more fired up to be part of what coach Saban and his excellent staff have established."

Why the Tosh Lupoi made sense on multiple levels

He was the odds-on favorite from the moment Lance Thompson exited the program, and now that it's official that Tosh Lupoi is the new outside linebackers coach the benefits are fairly evident to spot.

The University of Alabama announced the hiring of the 33 year old Monday afternoon, and, on the surface, he was a perfect fit.

Lupoi served on the staff in 2014 as what UA head coach Nick Saban described as an "intern" (the UA press release described his role as an analyst). That familiarity, with both the staff and players, should serve him well.

Tosh Lupoi takes over a talented outside linebacker group from Lance Thompson.
The task at hand comes with an array of talent to work with, including Denzel Devall, Ryan Anderson, Tim Williams, Rashaan Evans and Dillon Lee. He also has experience in a 3-4 defense, the scheme Saban runs at Alabama (although the defense mainly ran out of a nickel look in 2014).

Then there is Lupoi's reputation as an ace recruiter, a skill that was almost a must-have after the program lost Thompson and Kevin Steele, both excellent national recruiters, earlier this month.

At Cal, Lupoi was named the Rivals Recruiter of the Year in 2010, helping the Bears pull in top 15 nationally-ranked recruiting classes in back-to-back years (2010-11).

"Just like Steele and Thompson, he's a national recruiter of the year," Rivals National Recruiting Analyst Mike Farrell said. "Obviously it's more difficult to do that at a place like Cal than it is at Florida State or Alabama. He's an off the hook recruiter.

"He's a relentless and tireless recruiter. He relates to the kids extremely well. He is an upgrade as far as energy and aggressiveness. I think Tosh is so excited to get back into college. Now that he's back out there, he's going to be a whirlwind."

He helped develop first-round draft picks Cameron Jordan and Tyson Alualu.

Even during his off-the-field role in 2014, Tupoi was easy to spot at UA practices, bringing a level of energy that was contagious.

"This is an incredible opportunity," Lupoi said in the UA statement. "I'm extremely fortunate to join the best college football organization in the country. Fresh off our 24th SEC Championship, playoff appearance and pursing another top-rated signing class, it's an exciting time at Alabama right now.

"I couldn't be more fired up to be part of what Coach Saban and his excellent staff have established. I'm excited to contribute to this great University and organization that truly encompasses excellence on and off the field."

After national signing day, which is a little more than a week way, Saban turn his attention to filling the position of secondary coach. After Steele departed the program, Kirby Smart moved to fill the inside linebackers coach, leaving a staff vacancy in the secondary.

Having Lupoi already in the program made it easy for Saban to tap him as Thompson's replacement.

"We are happy to have Tosh on board as a full-time assistant coach," Saban said. "Tosh has impressed me during his time here over the course of last year and he will be a great addition to our defensive staff. He's a high-energy guy and we feel like he will be able to contribute some new ideas both as a coach on the field as well as his role as in recruiting."

@uagrad93 Now that you see how this has come together, step back a couple of weeks to another subject.

Passing downs with a five man front (that 50 look I mentioned) running nickel/dime sets.

Prediction: We see play out of the outside linebacking corps that's as good as what we saw out of Eryk Anders.

I think it's a natural promotion to me. I mean, he was projected to someday take the responsability so it's now his turn to develop his knowledge and experience on the background as an analyst for the defense.
