šŸ€ Alabama hires Nate Oats as new basketball coach

It might be best to bring back most of the guys so Nate can evaluate himself (on the court) who really needs to move along after next season. Giddens spot will be a plus for sure. Hopefully Kyria will stick one more year as well thus Nate has a decent roster to at least start with in year 1.

Can he coach them up? We'll see. Bama BB can be a hit with the fans...it is already documented for you.

Petty did a better job of scoring off the dribble and at the rim to his credit. His rebound numbers went up his 3pt percentage went down and turnovers increased.
Exactly.

SO. MANY. TIMES. Did I hear Chis saying "PUSH THE BALL, PETTY!" Literally no situational awareness when we're trying to push the ball full court off and inbounds or rebound. It's like he didn't know what to do with the ball if we weren't in a halfcourt offensive set.

That said, he DOES have 2 years experience playing in this league.

If CNO can work some of that laziness out of him and get him to give max effort at least 80% of the time, it will be a massive improvement.

Petty dribbles the ball too high sometimes up to his shoulder area. That leaves little room for error and allows the defender to steal or poke the ball away. He also needs to play within himself and in more control.

"A 3 point shooter"

Boy, that's extremely relative. He had a handful of games where he'd shoot lights out hitting 4-6 threes, but would go MIA for 3-5 games and shoot 0-15 or 1-20. Not exactly numbers that earn you a "3 point shooter' descriptor.

I take that back. Maybe he was a" SHOOTER" But a "maker" he was not.

Now granted, he DID improve his mid-range and drive game last year, because I guess he figured out that he couldn't live by the 3.

But he was STILL a turnover machine that had a massive lazy streak.

He played defense, went down low for rebounds, and could drive. It takes two seconds to know you hated this team, but Petty took strides. Can't knock a guy that makes improvements.

I hated this team?

Not at all.

I despised the lazy, sloppy, inept, fundamentally depleted PRODUCT we saw on the floor.

It takes a seconds to realize that I loved Avery, sometimes blindly, until I saw that he lost the team about midway through the conference slate of the regular season. That's when I took my blinders off and realized we really never were a great or even GOOD team. And we won more than we lost last year, and squeaked our way into the NCAA tourney on the back of ONE exceptional player, and his one miraculous shot that bounced us off the bubble into one of the Last 4 In.

Come on, dude. I know Avery was your boi and all, but dude, pull your head out of the butthurt sand... The concensus is that he turned out to be a TERRIBLE college coach.

The eff are you talking about? I'm over Avery leaving and haven't said anything about it or him in weeks. You haven't shut up in over a month about all of this, just Mr. Negative like so many others and it just gets old hearing negative stuff every.single.day. Terry and I both have given statistics that showed we were improving as a team, until the last two weeks and it went to hell. Statistics still support our claims. Now you are talking about Petty not having a pulse when you can clearly tell he is no longer a one dimensional player. That's all I am saying. You can talk about his non-chalant attitude all you want, but he ain't you, he ain't me, and he ain't anyone else here. Support a guy that made a decision to come to our university and give all of his time and effort to instead of drilling his ass with more negative bullshit. Come on man, we've talked personal lives a lot before, fill it with happiness, not negativity. All the bashing from everyone gets old af, just move on.

Right. OK.

But my financial support of the basketball program, the University in general...hell, my state tax dollars... Doesn't in some way or form help pay for his scholarship?

So I'm not allowed to be critical of a player and coach that underperforms?

What kind of Good are you smoking? Let me have a toke.

Are you actually donating to the program or just saying that to sound good? I hope you do, because I can and do appreciate that. And I don't think state tax dollars are earmarked for athletic scholarships, but I could be wrong.

I just think it's in poor taste to bash a guy on a team you're apparently a fan of. Eapecially one that has grown as a player. Sure, express your displeasure and opinion, but I think you've gone a little out of your way to be even more negative about him, the team, and the program in general. How old are you, and you're continuously talking down about a 19 year old? You wanna ask what I'm smoking yet you post about fifty tweets on here daily? Do what you wanna do, but I just think it's childish to rip a college kid continuously and then try to project on me that I'm high for calling you out.

But you know you're still one of my favs on here.

You gonna tell Chris Stewart that? Because while he may not have explicitly said out loud, you could definitely hear the frustration in his voice on INNUMERABLE occasions.

Obviously, he doesn't have the luxury of being somewhat anonymous and posting his true feelings on message boards or social media in general. He's a paid Homer, after all. But there were several...SEVERAL times throughout this season where you could just hear the tone in his voice change to utter disdain and disappointment while calling the game after a bone headed turnover in crucial moments, or some other mistake. There were enough of those moments to go around to all the players, but more times than not, the inference was toward Petty. Very veiled and diplomatic, but still disappointed nonetheless.

So when it's THAT obvious to even a paid shill, how can you still continue to pump sunshine?

I'll give this to you, man. You're loyal AF. Sometimes to your own detriment, though.

I think you can at least concede that he has definitely NOT lived up to the recruiting hype he received in high school. And that, my friend, goes back to lack of development. And who does that fall on?

** (I'm not singling out you here although there are some common things found with what you've said and what I've read from other fans.)

We've been told that falls on Avery. But now, it falls on Petty?

In all seriousness, I've seen comments on Giddens, Petty, and Ingram these last few days that have been along the lines of "good riddance," and some going as far as "I don't want him back." The criticisms these players have received have been placed squarely at the feet of Avery. But now, with a coaching change (to a guy that fits/fixes what people have been criticising Avery about) now that anger is focused on the player himself?

It has gone from "the problem is the coach" to "the problem is the player." (And I'm still of the opinion it falls much earlier in their lives...all the way down to their coaches early on, but I digress.)

SLO, there's so much of these criticisms we've seen over the last few months that simply don't make sense. Some I believe border on schizophrenia.

He's not a three point shooter. He led the team in 3 point shooting.
He's turnover machine. There were three guys with more turnovers (including Lewis whom everyone wants back.) And that's not to mention their turnovers aren't breaking national records but on par with teams going to the Elite 8. Kentucky is one example.

On another note: I know, without any doubt, Bama fans would be screaming with joy if Bama had been able to land Mark Few. I also know I've seen Bama fans pushing Ingram out the door as hard as they can. And yet, in all of this turmoil, Mark Few reaches out to Ingram about playing at 'Zaga.

Where's the sense in all of this? Literally, one thing contradicting another time and time again.

Laziness, lazy passes in clutch moments, bad ball handling skills. Those are things that can be coached out of a kid. But those trends continued, so they were being allowed to happen. "You're either coaching it, or you're allowing it to happen" - Nick Saban

Why I really don't care if petty stays is that on Monday, Petty was quoted as saying he "was 100% transferring, no matter who the new coach is". That is indicative of a bad attitude. Couple that attitude with his other flaws, and he just seems like a guy that won't fully buy in to CNO's diametric philosophy, and will eventually become a locker room cancer. Remember when Donta referred to attitudes in the last post-game presser?

As I said right after Petty 180'd and said he was staying, "I hope CNO can squeeze some blood out of that turnip".

I DO hope for the best. Petty has a lot of potential. CNO has to sharpen Petty's fundamentals, and coach that lazy streak out of him.

The biggest hurdle for CNO to overcome with Petty on the floor? Inconsistency. The biggest problem we saw with Petty was him scoring 25-30 one game, then disappearing for 3 games.

The biggest hurdle off the floor? Attitude.

Time will tell if THAT hurdle will be insurmountable. I hope it's not.

I HOPE CNO can turn Petty into a consistent, all-conference-caliber player next year.
