Alabama golf commit tied atop leaderboard at U.S. Women’s Amateur
Huntsville teen Michael Morard ended her round with four straight birdies and shot a 5-under 67 on Monday, tying her with Andrea Lee atop the leaderboard.
Huntsville teen Michaela Morard finished tied for the lead after Monday’s opening round of stroke play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur in West Point, Mississippi.
Morard, a rising senior at Randolph School in Huntsville who has committed to play college golf at Alabama, shot a 5-under 67 on Monday, tying her with Andrea Lee atop the leaderboard. She was one of 20 players who shot below par.
Morard ended her round Monday with four straight birdies.
“I was struggling to (hit) my driver,” Morard told Golf Week after the round. “Then the back nine I started hitting them good because I figured out how to keep my foot down in my swing, which I wasn’t on the front (nine), and then I started hitting fairways, which gave me good shots into the green, and then I started just hitting them to like three or four feet and then making putts.”
The field will be cut to 64 players after today’s second round of stroke play, followed with match play starting Wednesday. The champion will be crowned with a 36-hole championship match Sunday at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi.
Morard was also recently selected to represent the United States in the Ping Junior Solheim Cup in Scotland next month. She also recently advanced to the round of 32 in the U.S. Junior Championship.
Morard is scheduled to play in the morning session today.
