Alabama opened the season by beating Virginia Tech 35-10. But the special teams and defense combined to outscore the offense, which lost yardage on 12 of its 62 plays. In its second outing, the Crimson Tide defeated Texas A&M 49-42, but the Aggies piled up more yards than Alabama had ever given up in a game.
